He let out a sigh. I wondered if he was more scared of the world hurting our daughter, or him. He was an incredible husband. So thoughtful and kind. I felt safest in his arms. Neither of us were raised in a loving home, but I had faith that we would raise our children with love and compassion.
“Are you sure? Do you need anything?” he asked while shuffling on his feet. It was actually pretty adorable to see such a steady man unsure on his feet.
“I’m positive,” I replied with an encouraging smile. “Come hold your daughter, Cypress. I’m a badass Druid Princess, remember? I can hold down the fort.”
He took steps toward me like he was sneaking up on a sleeping giant. Every step, his eyes got wider. And when he was close enough, I gently handed him our newborn and nodded. “Wow, she’s so light,” he replied with a thick swallow. “So fragile.”
“She’ll be strong like her parents,” I whispered. Seeing him hold our daughter was the most beautiful sight in the world.
“She will,” Cypress replied in a reverent tone. He moved cautiously over to the rocking chair and slowly lowered himself to the seat. He was practically holding his breath.
“You’re so good with her,” I said, emotion clogging up my throat.
“Do you want to hear the story of how I met your mommy?” Cypress cooed while checking to make sure Emma’s little feet were covered with the blanket. “Once upon a time, there was a princess locked away in a high tower...”
I listened to his words as he spoke to our child, my eyes growing heavy with exhaustion with every word. I couldn’t think of a time I was happier. This moment right here was possibly the happiest day of my life. I had my husband. My child. And my kingdom.
And most of all, I was free.

As a teenager, I would hide in my room to read my favorite romance novels when I was supposed to be doing my homework.
I am the mother of three adorable boys and I am fortunate to be married to my best friend. I live in Austin Texas where I am determined to eat all the barbecue in town.
