“Okay,” I murmur in agreement. “Don’t get mad at me but, um, are you okay to drive?”
“Cara, love you, and I’m fuckin’ beyond livid right now. You, my sister, and every other woman who are a part of this club have been threatened. So, no, I’m not fuckin’ okay but I’m drivin’ because we gotta get to the clubhouse where I know you’re safe. Then I got to fuckin’ find Dickson and put a bullet in his head.”
Dickson?
I thought he talked to Spark.
I remember Dicky telling me briefly his name was Dickson that’s how he got his roadname.
Oh God.
I’m going to be sick.
Covering my mouth, I race the short distance to the bathroom and fall to my knees by the toilet and let the little bit of contents in my stomach come up.
Tears well in my eyes as I throw up. Visions of what Dicky did. How he had been so brutal with my body. A sob escapes at the same time a hand lands on my back causing me to scream.
“Fuck, babygirl. It’s just me, Cara. You’re okay. I’m right here. Remember you’re safe,” Nerd rasps, trying to calm me down.
“I . . . It . . . It was h–him w–who w–was th–the worse. I . . . I . . . thought he was nice since he brought me food at first. Th–then h–he was the one who hurt me the most. Even when they weren’t filming,” I cry.
“Shh, I’ve got you, Cara. I got you. He’s not going to touch you again. I’ll kill him first,” Nerd declares firmly. “You’re my woman and I finally have you the way I’ve dreamed about for years, don’t let what this fuckhead did to you make you take steps back in progress. We’ve come too far, babygirl. Let’s keep moving that way.”
He was right, but it’s hard. Taking a ragged breath, I nod my head and let him help me off the floor.
Moving to the sink, I grab my toothbrush and brush my teeth as I lock gazes with Nerd.
The promise shines in the fury swirling in his eyes.
He’ll keep me safe at all cost. Only I don’t want to lose him in the process.
“Come on, let’s get to the clubhouse,” Nerd orders after I finish brushing my teeth and put the toothbrush back in the holder.
“Yeah,” I murmur quietly.
By the time we pulled out of the driveway my panic had subsided somewhat but not completely.
For some reason the terror won’t leave me. I keep repeating Nerd’s words in my head. I got you. He’s not going to touch you again. I’ll kill him first. You’re my woman and I finally have you the way I’ve dreamed about for years, don’t let what this fuckhead did to you make you take steps back in progress. We’ve come too far, babygirl. Let’s keep moving that way.
I trust Nerd and nothing will happen. Not to him. Not to me. We’ll get to the clubhouse and they’ll figure a way to stop this guy.
As we go around the curve that leads to the main road something happens. A bright light of a vehicle comes up behind us out of nowhere.
“Nick,” I whisper, looking out the side mirror.
“It’s okay, babygirl. Just hold on. Take my phone and call Shadow for me will you,” Nerd states calmly, his gaze flicking to the high beams coming from behind us.
With the spans of the road not being very big and a ravine with at least a good fifteen-foot drop and trees to hit on one side, I’m more than a little nervous with how close the vehicle behind us is. With one tap of the bumper we’ll go through the guardrail.
Doing my best to stay calm, I pull up Shadow’s number. Just as I swipe my finger over the call button, it happens.
“Nick,” I scream as the truck goes skidding forward scraping the guardrail.
“Hold on, Cara. Get Shadow on the phone for me, okay?” I don’t know how he can seem so calm right now.
“Yeah, I’ll get him on the phone now,” I whisper doing my best to keep my voice from trembling.
“Thank you, babygirl, whatever happens just hold on,” Nerd murmurs, reaching over the center console to squeeze my hand as I use the other one to call Shadow.
Hitting the speaker for Nerd to talk to Shadow, I hold the phone in my lap, as Nerd curses.
“Brother, what’s up?” Shadow demands when he answers at the same time the vehicle behind us rams into the back of the truck sending us through the guardrail.
Screaming, I brace for the impact. Only we don’t go further than hanging off the edge.
“Oh God, Nick,” I cry, glancing in his direction.
“It’s okay, Cara, just hold on,” Nerd declares.
“What the fuck’s going on?” Shadow’s voice fills the truck from the phone.
But I’d dropped it when the vehicle hit us and I’m scared to reach for it.
“Brother, need some help, been run off the road. You got the app on your phone to be able to track where mine’s at. Hurry,” Nerd orders.
“Got it. Hang tight,” Shadow states.
“Yeah,” Nerd grunts and tilts his head to look at me. “Whatever you do don’t move, Cara.”
“I won’t, Nick. But I’m scared.” Tears spill down my cheeks as movement in the side mirror of the driver’s side catches my attention.
“Have a good landing, brother,” a voice that has haunted me for months calls out from behind the truck.
“Fuck, hold on, Cara. Just hold on,” Nerd orders as Dicky moves out of the way and the lights of the vehicle become blinding as it plows into the back of the truck sending us sailing over the side.
Holy terror slams into me as the truck rolls, airbags deploy, and pain filters everywhere as we finally stop upside down against a tree.
Rolling my head to the side, the last thing I see is Nerd’s face covered in blood.
“Please someone
