then I’ll call you in the morning. Have a good evening, sweetheart,” he murmurs before disconnecting.

Sighing I put my phone back down on the counter. Sitting back in the chair I think of what I’ll say to him tomorrow. I have the night to get my wits about me.

Little did I know the nightmare tomorrow would bring and that I should never have let myself become a target for Miles Granger.

Chapter One

Breaker

Present Day

“Why the hell did we fuckin’ agree to this shit again?” I grumble, standing off to the side of the hospital room. I’ve barely left this room and it’s starting to get to me; however, I won’t leave my Prez and his ol’ lady unprotected.

Chains may have woken up from the coma he’d been in after being shot and almost dying, but he still needs someone to watch his back. Not just as my Prez, but as my flesh and blood. Cousins who are more like brothers than anything else. We were raised together by Ryder when Chains’ parents died, and my mom and aunt disappeared.

Thank fuck, they did too. Aunt Irène and my mom are two hateful women who should never have taken their first breaths. Not only did they sell my cousin, Victoria, to be vindictive, they’d both been abusive to not just me but my cousins, Tyres and Brake. If not for Ryder taking us away from them and having them disappear, we probably would not have made it growing up. Or we would all have ended up on the streets. It definitely would have been a lot easier than living in their home.

“We agreed because not only is this woman associated with the Devil’s Riot and part of their family, she’s a battle buddy’s little sister. This isn’t us doing something just for the DRMC, but for someone I also consider a damn good friend,” Ryder states, quietly, not wanting to disturb Tiny who was finally, for the first time in weeks, sleeping curled up in her ol’ man’s arms. Chains had woken up briefly then fallen back to sleep. The nurses said it’s normal for him to do this, but the last time he woke up, he’d taken one look at his ol’ lady, held out his hand and all but ordered her to climb up in the bed with him.

If there were any other man I know that was as protective as Chains is of his woman, it’d be Victoria’s ol’ man, Tracker.

“Right. Who’s going to be watching out for this woman?” I grunt, not liking the fact we just finished dealing with one drama, only to get suckered into another. This one not having anything to do with the club.

“Considering you got a chip on your shoulder about this, maybe it should be you. However, nothing has been decided yet. Figured we wait until Levi and Dash get here with her to see what we’re dealing with,” Ryder shrugs.

The fact this isn’t just about doing the Devil’s Riot a favor but helping out some of Ryder’s battle buddies, I guess I can’t be too irritated. But still, I would have preferred not to have to deal with some bullshit drama caused by a woman we don’t even know.

“What are you two muttering about over there?” Tilting my head towards Chains, having just realized we’d woken him up.

“Sorry, Prez, didn’t mean to wake you.” Turning fully to face Chains, I take the few steps needed to be at his side. “You good?”

“Yeah, I’m good. Ready to get out of this fuckin’ place though,” he says quietly so he wouldn’t wake Tiny, who was still sleeping at his side. Chains’ arm wrapped protectively around her.

“I don’t blame you. Hopefully they let you out of this place soon,” I mutter trying to deviate the conversation for now. He’d been in a coma when the club agreed to take this woman in, and we haven’t told him yet. Chains may or may not like the idea. Then again, he was the one who agreed to take Tiny in as a favor to his sister, Victoria, and it all worked out for him.

“You trying to avoid telling me what you two were talking about over there?” Chains narrows his gaze on me, having read through what I’d been trying to do. Deflect the conversation. Shit I’m not sure if he’s going to like this or not.

“Son, we have a guest coming to stay with us for a while. She’s arriving late this evening with two of her brothers as well as a couple of the members of the Devil’s Riot Charter.” It was Ryder who answers him. Better it come from him anyway, Ryder was the Prez for years before handing the gavel to Chains. Something had happened with him and he’d needed to get away. He’d gone nomad for years. That is until Victoria came to us after her ol’ man had been shot.

“Does my sister think I’m taking in every damsel in distress?” Chains grumbles.

Tiny must have heard him because she immediately lifts her head and stares at him. “Is that the way you thought of me when I first came to you? A damsel in distress?”

“Fuck no, Bitsy,” Chains growls, narrowing his eyes on her now. “Your situation was completely different, and I wouldn’t change my mind about you being here with me for a minute.”

“Then why is having this woman coming here any different. She’s moving here for her own reasons. From what I’ve heard, she will be staying in a little house not far from the clubhouse rather than in one of the rooms.” Damn if Tiny can’t be feisty when she wants to be. I’ll take it compared to the weeks of deviation. She took Chains being shot hard and refused to leave the hospital. Barely ate or drank anything. Just stayed curled up in a chair next to his bed.

“Tiny’s right, Nora isn’t staying at the clubhouse,” Ryder states, crossing his arms over his massive
