This is the only time I’ve ever wore a tuxedo. I skipped the bow tie, or any tie at all.
Soon the last empty chairs are filled and Nathan, Nicholas, Washington and I are standing by my cousin, Max, who got ordained for days like this.
Lita walks up the aisle first, her wedding ring glittering like a shield against my older brother and their past.
Jon is next, dressed in a tailored suit, and he takes his place next to Diana’s ex-roommate and best friend.
Zoe is last, walking on rose petals she herself spread before the wedding began. She grins at me and stands by Jon.
The music shifts, and everyone rises.
My heart starts to pound hard as I face the aisle, gaze skimming our families and friends who wait with me for my future wife.
Deputy Jody Eudy throws me a smile as his wife, Christy, stays focused on where the bride will soon be.
Chief Fiore is also single-minded, her husband wondering how long it will take before they can eat.
Alice, Grams’s best friend, is three rows back with several of the residents from Silver Linings.
Diana appears and I shift my weight, stunned by how beautiful she is in all white, enhanced by a crown of cream roses resting on her dark hair. Her father inhales as they pause, pride in his eyes.
Diana and I lock eyes and she never looks away from me as they get closer. Everyone vanishes until Nathan whispers, “Nice six month’s belly there, Wy.”
I cover my laugh and walk down to meet her. “I’ll take it from here, Harv.”
He steps back and my Diana joins me to stand at my side, for two lifetimes.
Hers.
And mine.
Because like my Grams, she will never love another man besides the man she chose as her husband.
How do I know?
Because I’m looking back on this day from many years in our future where I lived to grow old with her. In fact, it was her who left me first. But not before our kids had kids of their own.
I held her as she left this world, telling her I’d meet her on the other side.
And because nothing felt the same without her, I didn’t keep her waiting long.
The End.
