fairly strong, Mira was still an all-star athlete. Despite the fact that her body was weaker than usual, Mira was still pretty muscular which meant that she was quite heavy. While they were halfway up the stairs, Mira cursed.

“I know it sucks, but we’re almost to the top.” Aria tried to soothe her while Adrian kept an eye out. Like a soldier, Mira grunted and continued up the staircase without any further complaints.

Aria wasn’t sure how Mira did it, considering that it had almost been three weeks since the car accident, plus the fact that she wasn’t given any treatment on top of being malnourished and subjected to who knows how many “experiments”.

It was safe to say that Aria was pretty proud of her best friend.

As they finally made it to the top, Adrian went to survey the surrounding area to see if the coast was truly clear.

As she watched him disappear, Aria wondered just how much adrenaline she could produce in a day. After all, her heart felt like it was about to burst if she heard any sounds of a fight or confrontation. There was also the fact that Aria had no idea how to defend herself and Mira.

She was definitely taking self-defense once she got out of here.

Chapter 25

Adrian

He was never a big fan of secret agent films because everything looked too easy for the protagonist. However, now that he was in this insane situation, he was almost hopeful that those movies were accurate. He wasn’t exactly ready to do hand-to-hand combat, not with the girls waiting for him.

As he tried to not make a sound, Adrian wondered what kind of folks they were dealing with. After all, if these people were really out to purse his kind then he would think they’d have better security.

If he wasn’t afraid for his life, it would’ve been insulting.

Everything in the house was pretty open; in fact, it was a nicely decorated place. No one would suspect of the horrors that his people were getting subjected to in just one floor down. As he strained to hear any sound of movement or indication that anyone was close by, he immediately spotted a window and recognized the location.

They were in one of the cabins near Lake Tahoe.

His research was right.

Hope started to fuel him as his dad should’ve found the files he compiled. The address may not be perfect, but the general area was right.

Once he cleared the floor, he immediately went to find the garage in the hopes of securing an escape vehicle. As if someone had answered his prayers, he then spotted a beautiful car ready for them to take.

He quickly moved towards the girls to tell them the good news along with his plan. As they made their way towards the garage, Adrian started thinking of the possibilities on where the key could be. For all he knew, they could be in a million different places inside of the cabin. Nevertheless, their first priority was to get Mira situated in the back seat.

Suddenly, he heard the hood of the car pop open and spotted Aria working on something. Not a moment later the car engine started.

Aria smiled sheepishly as she closed the hood. “Long story.”

He didn’t even argue because she just fixed their main problem. As she hoped into the passenger’s side and he went into the driver’s seat, his blood ran cold at the telltale sign of the garage door opening.

Adrian didn’t need to hear their screams to know how fast they needed to get out of there. Once the door was high enough, he switched the car into reverse and hightailed it out of there as fast as he could.

Adrian made the mistake of looking into the rearview mirror and saw the old woman in the passenger’s seat of the red car. The same exact one that hit Mira’s yellow jeep weeks ago. His heart began thumping louder as he was speeding out on to the road.

It didn’t help that the twisted roads were under heavy snowfall which made it difficult. Plus, it was downright terrifying to think of the gas levels of their escape vehicle. The red ‘E’ symbol was already lit up, but he couldn’t afford to drive economically, not when those sick bastards were right behind them.

All things considered, they were in a pretty bad situation. Adrian needed to think of somewhere where there were people. But where?

“Tahoe’s closer,” Aria told him as if she just read his mind. “There’s bound to be people there.”

Right and the police.

“Okay,” Adrian said before he asked, “Mira, how are you holding up back there?”

“Adrenaline’s gone so everything is just peachy,” she answered in a grunt.

“Have you ever been to the town at Tahoe?” Aria asked.

“No.” He shook his head.

“There are a lot of small towns that litter the sides of the road. It shouldn’t be hard to find, the only hard part is losing those guys.” Aria turned around in her seat to check. “I can still see their headlights.”

“Guys,” Mira called out to them.

“Yeah?”

“Check it out, they have a dinosaur phone back here.” She pulled out an old phone before pressing on a few buttons to see if it worked. “It works . . . Oh my God it works! We can call someone!”

“Dial 911!” He wasn’t sure who said it first, but that didn’t matter.

As Mira began to press the buttons, all three of them managed to hear the most beautiful sound in the world.

“911, what’s your emergency?” The voice on the other line was filled with static, but it was working and that was all he could ask for.

“We were kidnapped. We escaped, and we’re on our way to Lake Tahoe,” Mira said briefly as she tried to give all the significant details
