“It’s like if you can’t handle the heat then get the hell out of the kitchen, literally.”
“Maybe she’s just trying to up her cooking skill?”
“But how do you not know how to boil pasta? It’s literally water, pasta, salt, and a splash of oil,” he lamented. “All of my fresh pasta went to waste, and it was the worst.”
“How long did it take to make it?”
He moaned. “The whole class period. All she had to do was dip the pasta in the boiling water for two minutes and it would’ve been perfect.”
“Alright, Master Chef. You can always make a new one, a better one.”
Adrian only grumbled a little bit, but then changed topics, “So what are your plans for spring break?”
“Eh . . . I’m not sure. You?”
“I think my family wants to go to California. Do some sightseeing and be tourists for a little bit.”
“Oh, where exactly in California?”
“I think San Diego?”
“Lucky! I wish I could go. I love the beach.”
“But there’s sand everywhere.” He scrunched his face. “And it gets in places where it shouldn’t.”
“Like where?”
“You know where.”
“It’s never safe to simply assume things anymore, because you know what they say about assuming things.” Aria shrugged as she tried her best to hide her own smile.
“Aria.”
“Adrian.”
“Really.”
“What?”
“Aria,” he whined.
“Adrian,” she mimicked. “Man, how did I get stuck with such a baby?”
He quirked a smile. “Because I’m devastatingly charming, and we confessed at like, the worst possible time ever. So you’re stuck with me now.”
She snickered. “That’s great.”
“I know right? Anyway, should we get going? We still have to hit up the mall.”
“Really? Why?”
“I have to get something for Ellie’s birthday. I told you that like a week ago.”
“Oh right.” She nodded. “Yeah, let’s get going.”
The drive to the mall wasn’t long and neither was Adrian’s shopping trip. It was pretty easy for him to pick a gift for his sister and instead of heading home right away, they simply browsed the shops.
“What do you think of this?” Aria spun towards him with a pair of striped palazzo pants.
“Isn’t it winter?”
“For summer.” She then looked towards one of the mirrors. “I think it looks cute.”
“Won’t it be too hot?”
“Spring then.”
He shrugged. “I dunno, how about those?”
Aria turned her head to see where he was pointing but then frowned. “Those are dresses.”
“Yeah. Not a fan of long dresses?”
“I don’t really wear dresses.” She then added, “Skirts on occasion but it’s rare.”
“I think you’d look cute in one.”
“What’s with all the compliments?”
“Is it not good for the sweetest guy in the world to pay attention to the sweetest girl?”
“Adrian, you’re killing me here.” Her face turned a different shade of pink.
He merely smiled and then asked if she’d like to have dinner at his house. Since she already knew that her dad was working late that night, Aria sent him a few texts and it was confirmed; she would be eating supper with the wolfy fam.
It took a little bit for her dad to accept Adrian in her life especially after the whole fiasco; but it didn’t take long for her dad to genuinely like him which was a total bonus for her. She was even able to get her dad to be respectful towards James which made her feel like she should be the next Nobel Peace Prize nominee.
“So are you going to the spring formal?”
She looked at him. “Is this some suave way to ask me out?”
“No.” He rolled his eyes. “If I was going to ask you out to a dance, I’d do it with style.”
“What style?”
“The greatest style that you’ve ever seen.”
“Really?” Aria asked skeptically. “I don’t peg you for the romantic type of guy, the playful type yeah, but uber sweet and romantic? No, not really.”
“Wow, so much faith in your man, huh?”
“Oh, so you’re my man now?” she mused while he blushed a little bit. As they drove back to his house and she sang her heart out like the next top idol, Adrian asked again.
“So are you going to the dance?”
“I don’t know. Maybe? I didn’t get to go to the winter formal for obvious reasons. You?”
“Eh, I was thinking about it, it’s like a pre-prom prep.”
“Prom? Huh. Forgot about that.”
Aria then wondered if Adrian was the type of guy who would want to go to a dance like that. Then again, maybe she could coerce him into it? It wasn’t like their high school careers would last forever and she was secretly excited to take lots of cheesy photos.
“Hey, Adrian?”
“Yes, Aria?”
She couldn’t believe she was about to ask her probably-boyfriend-at-this-point to go to prom with her.
“Hey, what’s that?” Adrian pointed out to the front window and that’s when Aria realized they were already in his driveway.
On the snowbanks towards the side surrounded by fake candles, a sign lay flat. A slow smile crept onto her face as she read the short message.
Her eyes began to sparkle when she reread the single world again, just to make sure. Although she knew very well that Adrian was in the seat next to her and was waiting for an answer, she still took her sweet time.
It was just so cute and as she thought of everything they did that afternoon, it suddenly dawned on her that it must’ve been all planned out.
So instead of saying something as simple as ‘yes’ or ‘no’, she decided to live a little.
With the perfect first kiss.
