the steady beat as he stroked her hair. This moment would never come again. Life was precious, and deep down she loved Marcus with every beat of her heart.

“My heart and soul are entwined with yours, Marcus, but the Morrigan wants you, and she wants to hurt us.”

He stroked her cheek with the pad of his thumb and she closed her eyes, savoring the exquisite pleasure only his touch brought, forgetting the past.

“I know—let her come. I will be ready.”

Ella didn’t protest. She knew because Marcus had opened his mind to her that he believed the best way to tackle the goddess was to bring the war to her. To give her what she wanted. Him. He would surrender himself, if only to discover how best to defeat her, and although every part of her rejected the idea, she agreed. Fighting the tears, she clung to him.

Are you sure?

Yes.

“We’re going to find Issac Blackshaw, Ella’s brother. We believe he’s an important piece in this puzzle. It will also give the Morrigan an opportunity to strike at me if that is truly what she wants. Nothing is certain as far as that woman is concerned. She likes to play games, but finding this soul-shifter is vital. But before we go, I want to adjust the balance of power between us.”

“Marcus, we talked about this. I won’t take your power.”

Marcus captured both her hands in his. “All—that I am, belongs to you. Take what you need. It’s my way of making amends. It’s all I have to offer, and it will help you fight the Morrigan if that vision should be true.”

Nothing prepared Ella for his words and a panic set in. “You can’t do that, Marcus. You’ll be exposed and vulnerable, our bond weakened.” Ella bowed her head, unable to meet his eyes at his sacrifice, and knowing the threats the Morrigan issued about her husband.

“Sweetheart—look at me.” Marcus cupped her chin, holding her in place as she drowned in his dark as night eyes. “I’m more than flesh and blood. I can manage the Morrigan, but you need to do this for me because you’re the reason I try every day to be a better man. Standing here before our friends and family, I swear to you, I am yours. But, if somehow, she manages to raise this Dagda, you will need the strength I can give you to fight back. I need you to be my wingman on this. I need you to be strong enough to do what is needed, if the time comes.”

Ella shuddered at his words and her heart thudded in her chest. What if I lose him?

Not possible. He wrapped his arms around her, holding her tight. His confident words entered her mind, but they didn’t lessen her anxiety. She clutched his shirt, unwilling to be parted from him. The door clicked open and in walked the doctor, holding Nate.

“Dada.”

Marcus withdrew his arms from her, and they strolled over to Elizabeth. He picked their son up and kissed his button nose as he squealed with delight. Ella wrapped her arm around her husband’s waist, and he enveloped her in his arm too. Just the three of them. Leaning into his hard frame, she brushed her thumb over Nate’s cheek as he stared at both with his wide blue eyes in wonder, this moment forever frozen in time.

“I couldn’t settle Nate. He’s been crying ever since Zephra left him with me. I tried all my usual tricks with him but failed miserably. Honestly—I think he knows you’re here. I’m sorry to barge in like this.”

Jake chuckled and rose to stand by the doctor’s side, placing a hand on her shoulder, and leaned over them to stroke Nate’s cheek. “He seems fine now, Doc.”

Ella studied the pair and despite all her fears, smiled. Right now, everyone she loved resided inside this room. Love engulfed her.

“All I ever wanted is right here. Nothing will come between us, Ella—nothing. We will defeat the Morrigan together.” Marcus kissed her forehead and rubbed her back.

“I won’t let the Morrigan destroy us. We fight her together.”

“Together,” said Marcus.

Everyone in the room echoed the sentiment, and Ella shivered at what that would entail.
