is your friend.”

Becca still refused to make eye contact but did glance at the badge.

“I’m going to make you something to eat while Tiffany shows you to the shower so you can wash up. She’ll have some clean clothes for you to change into when you’re finished.”

Sin nodded in Tiffany’s direction, who took Becca by the hand and led her to the adjacent bathroom.

“Wait,” Sin heard Becca say. She turned to see Becca with her arm braced against the doorframe, her eyes looking straight at her.

“Yes?” Sin said.

“Where is Pia? Is she here?”

Sin walked over and gently rubbed Becca’s arm. “No. Not yet. But I promise I’ll find her.”

Becca’s lips quivered as she nodded.

As Sin stepped away, Becca mouthed, “Where is Jason? Is he . . . is he okay?”

“Agent Sawyer is fine,” Sin answered. “Get washed up and then we’ll talk.”

When Becca returned, she seemed more relaxed.

“Would you mind answering a few questions?” Sin asked.

Becca just shrugged. “Does my dad know I’m safe?”

“Not yet.”

“Can I talk to him?”

“After you answer a few questions.”

“Okay,” Becca answered, playing with her hair.

“Tell me what happened the night you and Pia were kidnapped.”

“It’s kind of a blur but I’ll do my best.”

Sin sat in silence while Becca recited the story. Everything was status quo until she got to the part where she triggered the alarm on her phone. “During the gun fight, what happened to your security team?”

“I’m not sure,” Becca said. “Everything happened so fast.”

“Was Agent Sawyer with your surveillance team that night?”

A tear ran down Becca’s cheek as she gave a weak nod. “I didn’t have a security team that night, but I knew he wouldn’t leave me all alone. I saw him before all the shooting started.”

“Sorry I interrupted,” Sin said, “please continue.”

“Everything is so jumbled in my head,” Becca mumbled.

“Try to piece it together. It’s important.”

“Pia took a hit off a joint and started acting funny. She started to stumble and slur her words immediately. I knew something was wrong and pushed the alarm on my watch. I wanted to run but I wasn’t going to leave Pia.” Tears streamed down her face as she continued to recall that night. “I saw Jason, but then I heard gunfire. I think someone hit me on the back of the head. I woke up tied to a chair in the cabin of a boat.”

“Describe the boat.”

“I can’t. I was blindfolded.”

“Are you sure it was a boat?”

Becca nodded. “I’m sure. I spent a lot of time fishing with my dad when I was a kid. You never forget the smell of diesel fuel or the rock of a boat.”

“Did anyone hurt you?”

Becca shook her head. “Not really. Not physically. They kept me drugged. Every time I woke up, I think I was in a different location.”

“Different environment or different location but still on the boat?”

“Both . . . I don’t know.” Becca dropped her head in her hands and rubbed her temples. “I have a headache. Do you have any aspirin?”

Sin nodded toward Tiffany. “There is a bottle of ibuprofen in the desk out front.” Addressing Becca again, she said, “What can you tell me about the men who kidnapped you?”

“Not much. The two guys we were with, D’andre and Amani . . . no wait, I remember hearing D’andre’s voice after I was taken, but not Amani’s. All the voices I heard were new.”

Tiffany returned with the ibuprofen and a bottle of water and handed both to Becca.

Sin’s phone buzzed and she glanced at the in-coming call but didn’t recognize the number. “Excuse me for a second,” she said as she walked to the main part of the hangar.

“Hello,” she said.

“Agent O’Malley?”

She picked up on a thick Italian accent. “Speaking.”

“My name is Dominic Russo, Pia’s father. I want to know what you’re doing to find my daughter.”

Sin walked outside as she continued the conversation. “Assuming you are who you say you are, how did you get my private number?”

“That’s not important. What’s important is my question.”

She bit her lower lip while she ran different scenarios in her head. “I don’t like doing business on the phone. I’m going to text you some coordinates, if you want to continue this conversation, you’ll meet me there tomorrow at noon.”

“Wait. Don’t hang up.” She could hear desperation in his voice. “Just tell me if she’s alive.”

“I have every belief she is. Meet me at noon and we can talk further.” She hung up the phone and reentered the room.

“That was Pia’s father,” she told Becca. “Any idea how he got my number?”

Becca shook her head.

“Did you find Pia?”

“Not yet, but I promise you I will.”

Becca continued to massage her temples. “Do you have any coffee?”

Sin smiled. “My kind of girl.” She poured Becca a cup and sat back down. “Tell me about Pia.”

Becca lowered the cup after taking a sip. “What do you want to know?”

“How long have you known her? How long have you been roommates?”

“We met the first day at Dartmouth. I was supposed to room with another girl I met at orientation, but when I arrived at the dorm, Pia was there. They told us that there had been a change in room assignments.”

“You didn’t know her before college?”

“No.”

“Did she know you were the president’s daughter?”

“Not at first, but I told her right away. Some people get freaked out about being followed everywhere, so I wanted to give her the chance to get reassigned to a new room if she wanted.”

“What was her response?”

Becca’s lips rose slightly in a grin. “That’s one of the cool things about Pia. She just rolls with whatever. She was cool with it, and she never treated me different because of who my dad is. That’s another one of the things I love about her.”

“What else can you tell me about her?”

“I can tell you I’m worried about her. She’s real Italian, if you know what I mean. She’s not the type to be passive or let anyone push her around. I’m afraid her attitude will
