bird; he didn’t know why.

She pulled up and laid her lips on his. She was still rubbing his chest. The kiss was much more intense than any other she’d given him. Then she slid down and started sucking on his nipple. To say he was surprised would be an understatement. His body had a sudden tingle. Her tongue flicked all around the hardened tip.

“Gini,” he sighed.

She slithered back to his face. “Gini… do you…” he gulped. “Do you want…”

She kissed him again. This time there was fire in her lips, and before he knew it, he was deep inside her. His first thought was not to hurt her, but any thought of anything soon flew out of his head as their bodies entangled and they both were heated, sweating, and breathing deep.

He let out an almost painful yelp, and his body fell limp on the bed. Gini, on top of him, groaned. Then he felt the tension in her body give way. His emotions were raw—out of control. The tears poured down the sides of his face. His body was edgy, and he cried harder; he couldn’t stop. It was a catharsis for everything he had bottled up inside of him. She put her flattened palm on his cheek. He was paralyzed with emotion; he’d never had such a glorious feeling. Finally, feeling his arms, he wrapped them tight around her.

His body made a hard jerk. He hadn’t realized he’d fallen asleep. Gini was curled up next to him, just touching his side with her legs. He carefully pulled away from her and sat on the edge of the bed. His pants were gathered down around his right ankle. With his elbows on his knees, he swiped his hands down his face. Their relationship was no longer doctor and his patient, or young, handicapped woman with older man wanting to help her have a good life and take care of her until she died. No, none of those. They were now husband and wife, with a partnership, a loving bond—a bond never to be broken. He’d heard people talk about their deep love for someone else—their soulmate—but he’d never clearly understood the term. A soulmate? What was that supposed to mean? But now, yes now, he knew. He knew the feeling for someone that no words in the English language could ever describe—a love so deep it grabbed at him each time he thought about it.

Robert had had his fair share of sex, he’d guess, but what they had done in that bed was not sex. It was a joining of two bodies, two minds, two hearts, tightly bound with a rope of love. Each of them only wanting to be with the other, shutting out everything else around them. He realized now that he was just as dependent on her as she was on him. He’d never felt such uncontrollable emotions, and he didn’t care if she saw them, if she felt them. She was the caretaker of his heart, and he knew it was in strong, loving hands.

He’d figured they’d take a trip together, just the two of them, to show her a place special to him and hope she would feel the same. A trip that had started so wrong, but now the paradise had a whole new meaning. His special place now was with Gini, the most incredible creature on planet Earth.

He got up, slipped his left foot in the other pant leg, and pulled them up, then stood looking at her peacefully sleeping, his heart aching so full of love he didn’t know how he could contain it. Then he walked around the bed and got in, pulling her body as close to his as he could. With the sheet draped over them, he fell into a deep, wonderful sleep.

In the morning, Robert got up feeling completely carefree. Every time he thought of their lovemaking, there was more happiness inside of him. No one had warned him, warned him that he could be consumed by love—not caring about anything but being with the woman he loved. He thought he’d been in love years earlier. He silently laughed, yes, another patient. But now he realized there was no love there, even though he thought his heart was broken. Young and foolish then, perhaps; maybe maturity had brought him to take the right path. But in the end, he knew it was Gini. She was the one who focused the light on him; she was the one who made him understand caring. He did care for all his patients and wanted them all to have successful and healthy futures. But his education and practice taught him people with brain traumas rarely, if ever, have a full, meaningful life after. Gini had changed all of that. She’d beat all odds. He couldn’t take the credit for that; it was all her doing. She was determined to go on, and she had pulled him in to lead and help her; again, out of his control, although he had no idea at the time. He could hardly wait for her to wake so they could have another glorious day together.

Although Robert had been to the resort on several occasions, he was always on the deep-sea fishing package, so he saw little of the resort itself. He was pleasantly surprised with the cabana. It was roomy with two twin-sized beds, a couple of sling chairs, and a rinse shower tucked in the back.

They walked to the beach. The slow, calm waves rushed ashore. As soon as the water washed over Gini’s feet, she turned to walk away.

“Guiney, don’t you want to go into the ocean?”

“No… uff. Be… uff… coe.”

“Hahaha, sweetheart, this water’s very warm. Come on, come with me.”

“No… uff.”

He swung her up in his arms and carried her out into the surf, feeling her cringe and tense up. But once he dipped her
