“It seems to me like you will need more time to heal, Summer. It won’t do Alex any good to find you wasted away and broken. I sent a telegram today to the post office in New York for your brother. I detailed our situation and address. He will know where to find you if he goes to the post office.”
Summer stares hard at him and smiles. “You have thought of everything, thank you. I need to see him and know that I did not lose everyone. Does that make me weak?”
Victor leans forward, “You are the strongest woman I know, Summer. Our bodies heal faster than our hearts, be patient with yourself.”
“What about our soul’s Victor. Do they heal when the evil in this world touches it, or does it contaminate us?” Summer stands slowly and walks to the deck needing to breathe in some fresh air, Victor follows her. She sighs, “You have asked me for something I'm not sure I can give you because all I can think about is making him pay for killing my family and destroying my world.”
“Summer, vengeance will not bring your family back. Though I understand the sentiment behind it. This rage you are feeling will consume you if you don’t find a way to fight it. What better way to win than living a full, happy life?” He pulls her close and kisses her softly, Summer savors the taste and feel of him.
“When I am in your arms, Victor I can almost believe in happily ever after again.”
“For now, hold onto that and to us. You are not alone anymore.”
Chapter 29
Jung spends his evening and night in the arms of a whore. She takes the money he offers and goes to get breakfast only to come back quickly holding a wanted poster.
“I didn’t know you were famous, love. I would have charged you more,” she laughs.
Jung balls up the poster and glares out the filthy window. “Tell me what you heard.”
“It seems the police are checking hotels, trains, bars, and they are hanging wanted posters in the post office, and around the docks. You need to skip town and quick.”
His mind is spinning with all the possibilities. Summer Denning has ruined his plans, but he is not stupid enough to sit here and be arrested. “I will pay you well for your time, more than that poster offers. I am going to need two things from you.”
Her crimson-painted lips smile at him, “I'm all ears.”
A few minutes later, she heads to the train station to buy a ticket and then to the post office to have a package delivered. She knows better than to ask too many questions. The line at the post office is long, but she does as instructed, then returns that afternoon to her room. Jung is waiting, anxious to leave this filthy hell hole.
“It’s done. Here you go, a first-class ticket to Pennsylvania.” Jung glares at her and snatches his ticket.
“Pennsylvania? Is that the best you could do?” He demands.
“You wanted the first ticket out of New York and that train leaves in two hours. You can disappear, now pay up!” Jung gets the cash from his wallet when he pulls it out her eyes go wide, and she snatches at it.
He pays her half and waves the other half with a ghastly grin. “I require another service from you before I leave.” She smiles up at him licking her lips as she undoes his belt buckle. Before they start, he places his pants and shoes on a chair in the corner of the room and feels her hands as they snake up his thighs and cup his balls.
“My pleasure,” she groans as he whirls around and pushes her to the floor on her knees. Jung sinks his hands into her dark hair, and just as her hot mouth draws him in, he grins. He pumps his hips hard, and she catches the glint of his silver scalpel in her eyes just as he finishes in her mouth. She has no time to scream as he draws the blade across the main artery in her neck. Jung jerks free from her mouth at her gasp of shock and holds on tight to her face as her blood pumps out painting his naked thighs with her life force. “Yesss,” he groans rubbing some of the blood across her large breasts.
When she grows too weak to fight Jung whispers, “Sorry, but I must leave no loose threads behind.” He tosses her to the floor and moves to the water basin to wash off the evidence. “You’re a real bleeder,” his laugh is short as he uses the bedsheet to wipe off the blood from his body. He collects his cash and train ticket with a sigh. “I will have to be satisfied with knowing Summer will die a slow and painful death.” When Jung leaves the room twenty minutes later, her twitching foot is the last thing he sees.
Chapter 30
“Faster!” Jonah demands running ahead of Victor and Summer. The doctor came to check on her progress and deems her on the mend. The morphine is to be used only at bedtime for a few more days and then stopped altogether. His directions are to take it easy still, no lifting anything heavy for another week. He recommended another week before she will be fit to travel.
“The owner established this garden for his wife. It has private access to the river and a shaded picnic area in the heart of a willow tree.” Victor explains as he looks at the flowers and beautiful fall colors that cover the area.
“It's lovely.” Summer laughs as Jonah swings his wooden
