“We have to take him to a hospital,” new girl says.
“You need to get the fuck out of here. Anyone connected to this shit is going to jail. Go,” I bellow at her.
“Shit, you’re bleeding,” Luke says.
“Shit,” I mutter.
Deacon and I rush Kelex into my car. He’s no longer conscious. We get him in the back seat, and I turn for the girl.
“Can you still drive your car away from here?”
“Yeah, that guy only clipped me after. He took the impact for me,” she replies, pointing at Kelex in my car.
“One of you follow her to somewhere safe. You on the call list?” I ask her the last part.
Seth has a call list for all of the drivers. We’re all saved by nicknames. I’m thinking fast as the sirens sound in the distance.
“Yeah, I’m Skittles,” she says.
If this shit weren’t so serious, I’d burst into laughter. I continue to bark out orders as a plan forms in my head. “I’ll get someone to you for your head. I’ll have them text you. All of you, get your cars out of here. Lie low.”
“And you?” the chick says.
“I’m going to be the lowlife my father says I am. None of you were here. None of you know what the fuck happened. I’ll get him to the hospital. This is all on me, I’ll take this one.”
“You can’t do that,” she says.
“Already done, sweetheart. Now get your ass the fuck out of here before I change my damn mind.”
Chapter 1
We’re Through
Pit
Two months later…
“It was nice having you here, Pitman,” the CO says as I walk past him. “We’ll see you again soon.”
I toss up my middle finger. “Tell your wife daddy’s on his way home,” I call over my shoulder.
“Son of a bitch,” he mutters.
It’s been two months in this hell. These fucks have been trying to break me from day one. Wrong motherfucker.
I’m ready to get my ass out of here and go home. Home. That is if I have one of those. I know for a fact I’ve lost my apartment.
I shake my head and focus on the old man with the gray hair waiting for me at a bench table in the yard. My last visit before I get out of here. I stop before him and place my knuckles on the table, letting my muscle flex as I lean in.
His guys go to move in, but he lifts a hand to halt them. I have no beef here, but I want to make it clear I’m not intimidated. When I leave these walls, I’m not taking orders from no one, just as I haven’t in here. If I have to fuck them all up to make that point, I will.
“You wanted to see me?”
He gives a light chuckle. “This is why I like you, kid. You have balls and I honestly don’t think they come from your daddy’s pull,” he says and watches me closely.
I narrow my eyes. “I’ve never said who my daddy is,” I reply.
“You know who I am. You don’t have to tell me shit. I’m here because of that son of a bitch.”
I straighten to my full height and fold my arms over my chest. I never know what I’m going to get once my father’s name enters the picture. The district attorney himself is a slimy bastard with more skeletons in his boozed-up closet than a serial killer.
My father is as dirty as they come. Dropping his name can save your ass one day and have your head the next. He’s right, I haven’t relied on my father or his pull while in here.
Lord knows, he hasn’t offered any help—until now that is. I’m finally getting out of here. Two fucking months and the bastard has just decided to remember I exist. I bet he thinks this is some type of fucking lesson.
“So, is this your way of saying I’m not getting out of here because of some debt he owes or some shit? Sins of the father and all that. Fuck him, I’m not that son.”
He sits back in his seat and mirrors my posture. I lift a brow waiting for his reply. Like I said, I’m getting out of here today. I’ll take this entire place on if I have to.
“No, this is me showing respect for what you did on your first day here. You didn’t know who I was, but I now owe you my life,” he says.
“Well, first, you need to pick your men better. Second, I was just trying to take a fucking shower. How was I supposed to know my CO wasn’t on payroll and walked my ass into the middle of a slaughter?”
“You still could have saved your own ass and left me for dead. And you should never make assumptions. That guard was on payroll. Someone wanted you there for slaughter, they just underestimated you,” he says pointedly.
I release my arms and squint as I see his words for what they are. Someone set me up. Big fucking mistake. I’m no one’s pussy.
“Yeah, well, now we’re even. Thanks for the info,” I grumble.
“I think my life is worth more than something you’re bound to find out on your own. Like I said, I’ve done my research. I suggest you do yours. My reach is long even from behind these walls.
“Notice you haven’t seen those guards, or the guys who jumped us since that day. A package will be waiting for you outside. We now have an understanding, you can call on me and my family anytime you need,” he says.
“And what do you want in return?”
He stands. “I’m a friend, Pit. Know the men from the swine. I’m the best kind of friend to have.”
“And why is that?”
“You now have the keys to the city. I’m one of the reasons your father has that nasty drinking problem. No matter what he has tried or has done, he can never be
