I’ve been wanting to write a marriage of convenience story for a while now, and I think Hayes and Waverly were the characters I was waiting on to do it.
These two challenged me, but also made it so fun to portray a tale of the difficulties of what it means to be married. I love that their initial attraction/hate blossomed into a friendship and then into love. I love that they never lost their banter, which keeps things fun. And the pens and the cupboards? Yeah, that’s me and my husband in real life, and I knew I had to put that fight in this story.
My best friend married us ten years ago now and asked us each to give him a list of quirks that we loved about one another, and things that irritated us to no end. To this day I still leave caps off of pens, and my husband still leaves cupboards open. But I loved that our vows were unique to us and loved including that detail from our relationship in this story.
Side Note: Shortly after I finished this book, I put my wedding dress back on (with alterations to make it fit) and my husband threw on a suit, and we took wedding pictures of us ten years later to celebrate our anniversary. My best friend who married us crashed our photoshoot and performed a vow renewal to commemorate our anniversary. We stood on a field with the sun setting behind us and promised to continue to love each other for ten more years (and longer). It was amazing, beautiful, and something I’ll never forget.
There are so many details about Hayes and Waverly’s relationship that I’m proud of, but I hope that you as the reader saw the entire message—marriage is hard, no one is perfect, but if you’re both dedicated to working through it and putting each other first, you can have a beautiful relationship that stands the test of time.
I’m grateful every day for the man I married, that my partner is my best friend who annoys me but also makes me laugh, who treats me with respect and encouragement, and makes me feel as if we can get through anything in life together.
