Chapter 1: Tell Me About Your Day
WHAT DO YOU MEAN HE SAW YOU?
“What?” I asked, mildly startled. I was confused. I couldn’t have heard correctly. My wife Susan was giving me a rundown of her day, but her delivery had become mysteriously vague. After delivering the usual daily catch-up, a coda suggested something unusual had occurred. We were enjoying an after work glass of wine on our new deck admiring our newly landscaped yard. I refreshed our glasses as I waited for her clarification.
She was hesitant to respond. I raised my voice a notch. “What do you mean Greg saw you? Saw you how?” Greg was our neighbor.
“Oh, don’t worry,” she said. “He didn’t see me naked. I just mean I wasn’t dressed.”
“That’s not clarifying it much.” Susan was an obnoxiously beautiful, statuesque woman of impeccable taste, and was normally very bright and articulate. I loved her to death, but at times she could be exasperating. It was never willful, but more the effect of a reluctance to commit to whatever form of the truth she was formulating in her mind.
She remained hesitant.
“What the hell do you mean?” I asked again, exasperated.
“I mean, I wasn’t dressed.” She felt if she repeated herself enough I would get the message. It wasn’t working. I gave her a look to indicate my continuing lack of comprehension. Not dressed, not naked—this much I understood. What it meant exactly wasn’t so clear. Then there was the matter of why? But I was sure we’d get to that.
“I was in my underwear, Ryan. What else could I mean?” Now, she sounded exasperated. Clearly, I’d done something wrong by failing to grasp the situation in full.
“Why were you in your underwear?” It seemed like a logical follow-up question.
“Because I was warm.” It had been a hot, sultry day, so I couldn’t argue with that. I was beginning to follow the logic, but how could this relate to my neighbor’s having seen her in her underwear?
“Okay,” I said. “You were warm. But how did it work out that Greg saw you in your underwear? Did he sneak into the house? Has he bought a telescope?”
“Because he was right in front of me,” she said. “We were talking out in the yard.”
I wondered if I’d slipped into another dimension operating on alternate codes of decorum, one which permitted people to have neighborly chats in their underwear. I was feeling exasperated again, but also strangely aroused. I poured us another glass of wine.
“Susan, I’m trying my best here, but I’m still not following what happened today. Specifically, why were you talking to Greg in your underwear in our yard?”
“It’s like I said, Ryan. I couldn’t have been any more clear… I was warm. After you left for work, I went outside to look at the garden, saw some weeds, started pulling them, the sun was rising, I got warm, so I took off my robe. It was my winter robe, so... You know the one. I was wearing it when you left.”
This made sense. She went into the yard in her robe, picked some weeds, got warm, took off her robe. That all checked out. But the neighbor wouldn’t have been able to see her in her underwear thanks to our new high fencing.
“So how does Greg fit into all of this? He wouldn’t have been able to see you due to the fence.”
“Oh, no, he couldn’t see me over the fence. I opened the gate to let him because he knocked on it.”
“In your underwear? Why didn’t you put on your robe?”
“I forgot I wasn’t wearing it.”
“And you just stood there, in your underwear, talking to him?”
“Now you’re up to speed. Yes, it’s all like I said.”
I was now forced to imagine Greg, a handsome man, and recent divorcee, staring at my wife in her underwear in broad daylight.
