repeatedly demonstrated how to disarm someone wielding a fire poker. My Kalamazoo writing group served as insightful first readers—Michelle Preston, Anna Lunt, Marianne von Bracht, Erin Brady, and Meghan Decker. My critique partners pushed the story to greater heights—Sarah Johnson (who read the book half a dozen times), Jeanna Mason Stay, Pam Eaton, Brooke Lamoreaux, Emily Goldthwaite, and Rachel Josephson. Other readers provided expert critiques—Krystyna Hales, Amy Parker, Tiffini Knight, BreAnne Johnson, Whitney Woodard, and Marisa Canova. I could spend pages thanking the countless other friends and writers who have supported and inspired me.

A special thanks goes to my incredible, fearless agent, Stephany Evans, who helped me find the book’s true mystery. I am so grateful for my extraordinary editor, Sinclair Sawhney, who helped me dive into the story’s emotional heart, and for the rest of the amazing team at Tule Publishing.

And of course, none of this could not have been possible without my family. Endless thanks to my husband, Scott, for his love and support, critiques and marketing advice, and to my three daughters, whose first or middle names all belong to Austen characters.

Also, thank you to Jane Austen. For everything.
