Lyrica wished she could somehow magically bring mates together. While some thought she really did have some new kind of mate-matching magic, she still had doubts. It was impossible to prove she had a magic they weren’t sure even existed. Still, she didn’t mind spreading the love wherever she could…even if people didn’t know she was doing it.
Lyrica had been hoping the curiosity about the Xenon would have boosted interest in her symposium about mating bonds. However, the lack of attendance told her she’d been wrong. Perhaps the Alliance had warned people not to come. No, she thought. Gabriel would never have allowed that. Not when he knew how important it was to her.
She wasn’t sure how long she sat there sulking, the sound of the nearby waterfall her only companion, but she was brought back to the present when she sensed her mate was close by.
“There you are,” Gabriel said, his deep voice a comforting balm to her ragged soul. When she lifted her head, he hurried over to her. “Hey, what’s this? Why are you crying? Did someone upset you? Who do I need to kill?”
She let out a watery laugh. “I’m sorry, it’s just that I thought people would come. I know it’s silly but…” Her words trailed off, then irritation had her snapping, “I don’t know why you’re laughing at me. It’s mean.”
“Come on, princess. I have to show you something.” He pulled her to her feet and leaned down to brush his lips against her forehead.
“Where are we going?”
“You’ll see.”
When he led her toward the edge of the roof, she gasped in surprise. A crowd of people filled the courtyard in front of the palace, and in the distance, more were heading their way.
“We had to change the location of your meeting because so many people started to arrive. Nina is downstairs organizing things while the others are arranging seating in the ballroom. You did this, princess.” Gabriel’s voice was filled with pride. “Look at all of the people who believe in what you are doing.”
Feeling a little lightheaded, Lyrica leaned against him. “I don’t understand. I was expecting a few dozen people at most, not hundreds!”
“They’re here because you’ve given them hope…hope for a future filled with love.” He smiled down at her. “You are the keeper of my heart and my soulmate, and together, we are proof that love can unite the races.”
Taking a deep breath, she took one of his hands and placed it against her flat stomach. “No, this is proof.” When his lovely iridescent blue eyes shimmered with emotion, her own eyes filled with tears. “I know you said you didn’t think you could handle any more surprises, but…surprise, we’re having a baby!”
“Are you sure?” he asked, his voice shaking.
“I just woke up this morning and knew. I still think we should check to make sure and—”
He let out a shout of joy, lifting her off her feet to swing her around in circles. “Shit,” he cried out, carefully setting her back down. “That can’t be good for the baby.”
“I’m fine,” she said with a laugh. “I promise. And who knows, it might be twins.”
He kissed her long and deep, then rested his forehead against hers. “I never realized I could be this happy. I love you, mate of my heart.”
“As I love you, keeper of my soul.”
But he was far more than that. He was her everything.
Their life together was just beginning, and they had an eternity filled with love, laughter, and a few more surprises to look forward to. And now that they were starting a family together, all her dreams really had come true.
