I smiled. “Let them have fun, Breeze,” I said in a playful voice before setting down my beach bag and pulling out a towel to sit on. Breeze joined me and started chatting about something my brother did at school, but I was too busy listening to Mrs. Shirley.
“Maybe later,” she said in a low voice, “we could recreate the first night we met, hmm?”
Brian eyed me before giving her a tight smile. “Let’s see if I get my ass handed to me. I’m an old man. After chasing after all these young teens on the waves, I might need a Tylenol and a nap.”
She laughed before running her fingers across his abs. I wanted to break them off. “You’re definitely not an old man. Old men don’t have six packs.” She then winked and grabbed at the waistband of his shorts. I couldn’t fucking handle this anymore.
I tore my eyes from them and scanned the crowd. If this was a test, I was going to ace it. I looked at a few surfers. Too young. Too frat boyish. Crocs at the beach? Ugh..
Ah. There.
My eyes landed on a tall, tanned surfer with defined muscles, broad shoulders, and a light dusting of hair on his jaw. He had black tattoos on his arms, and his hair was wavy, touching the tip of his ears. I’d seen him competing against Chase at a few of these competitions, and I decided immediately that he would work perfectly. “Excuse me,” I said to Breeze. “I’ll be right back.”
I strutted up to the surfer, swaying my hips for Brian’s benefit. I knew he was watching. I could feel his eyes on me no matter where I was. “Hey,” I greeted. He turned to face me, curiosity etched on his face. Now what was his name again?
“I’m Violet,” I greeted before putting my hand on my hip.
“Hello, Violet,” he replied while sweeping his dark gaze up and down my body. “I’m Kai. Are you here to watch the competition?”
“Yep,” I replied, popping the p. “And tonight, you’re taking me on a date.”
“I am?” he asked while cocking his head to the side.
“You are,” I replied cheekily. Even though it went against everything in my gut. Even though I wanted Brian to take me to a nice dinner, then fuck me in his bed. This was what I needed. I needed someone to distract Breeze and Mrs. Shirley. Someone that would keep Brian from freaking out about getting caught. Kai was about to become a really good diversion. Hell, maybe I’d enjoy it.
“Well, alright then. I’ll meet you here after my run. See you then, Violet,” he rasped.
“Good luck,” I replied while waving goodbye. Once he was gone, I turned on my heel and sauntered back to the Shirleys. “Who was that?” Breeze asked.
Brian looked furious. His fists were clenched at his sides, and his mouth was pressed into a thin line. He was lucky his wife was busy reading a book, or we’d get caught.
“My date for tonight,” I replied easily. “Didn’t you hear your mom? Surfing competitions are good luck. Maybe he’s the one.”
I knew only Brian would get this statement. I knew that Allison wasn’t the one for him. Their story wasn’t some superstitious hallmark for love and passion. No, the intense, passionate inferno that Brian and I shared could only be born from the people we broke.
Violet
I was giddy in the front seat of Brian’s Jeep. I couldn’t believe we were actually getting a weekend away. Brian told his family he had to go to visit his brother for the weekend, and I told Kai—who was now, unbeknownst to him, my fake boyfriend—that I was spending the weekend with Chase. The two of them avoided each other like the plague, so it wasn’t hard for Kai to agree for a weekend apart. He was easy enough to date, and if I weren’t in love with Brian, I probably could have given Kai a fair shot.
I picked fights with my fake boyfriend regularly, probably because it felt wrong to be with him while my heart was somewhere else. Tricking Kai into a relationship was necessary, though. Brian didn’t like sharing me, but he liked keeping his daughter in the dark.
But this weekend, we could finally just be. Brian booked us a room at the Sandals Resort, and I had every intention of finally fucking his brains out. I’d never had to work so hard for dick, but seeing as my eighteenth birthday was just a few months away, he seemed more willing to give in, not that all the other things we’d done were legal.
I grabbed his hand as we drove, enjoying the rush of the wind through my hair. It felt like I could finally breathe. We put mile after mile between us and reality, and the farther away we got from his family, the more Brian relaxed. I turned up the radio, and we sang along, badly, the rest of the way to the resort.
When we got there, Brian dropped me off at the front to go check in while he parked the car. He was paranoid and made the reservation under my name. He said if anybody went digging around, it would look really bad as a married man for his name to be on the guest list of a romantic hideaway hotel. I understood his point, but who would even think to look in the first place?
“Good afternoon and welcome to Sandals!” I was greeted by a really pretty redhead with bright green eyes. She had her hair pulled back
