They’d been born early and spent a while in the NICU before finally being able to come home. Now that they are, she’s nervous about having anyone watch them. Lillian offered to watch them while here during the time Alison was here so she could be close to them. We’d converted the apartment upstairs into a play area and nursery-type area for kids since Ryland spends a lot of time here with me.
I love having him here, and it means I also get to spend time with Lillian.
“Yeah, I’m sure. I want you to come work with us. It gives you something to do. It gets you out of the house and you keep your sanity. Don’t forget the fact you love reading just as much as I do. Plus, I’m going to need the help,” I murmur and bite my bottom lip.
I took a test this morning and showed it to Kenyon when he came into the bathroom to brush his teeth. He took one look at the test, tossed it into the sink, and carried me to bed, where he showed me how much he loved the fact we’re expanding our family.
“Hold up, you’re pregnant?” Zoe whisper yells, not wanting to disturb the babies lying in their car seats. If didn’t see it with my own eyes, I’d swear I’d missed the hint of hurt flicker behind her eyes.
I nod in response getting a squeal of delight from her as she seems truly happy and get smiles from Lillian and Alison. Bridget would have joined us if Liam hadn’t been running a fever. Between the baby and her toddler, she’s got her hands full.
“Well then, I’ll gladly accept your offer,” Alison says, a smile lighting her face up.
Customers start pouring inside, and I smile at them as Zoe and I both get up to move to our stations. Several of the customers who come in work with Kenyon and come here to get their coffee from Zoe.
The door opens again and the man himself comes inside with Marc in tow. I haven’t seen him since the night Mitch and Alison’s twins were born.
“Hey, Marc,” I greet him and notice out of the corner of my eye that Zoe stiffens.
She’s still not been herself, even if she has tried to put on a charade for all of us to think she’s okay.
I know my friend, and I want to know what’s going on.
Does it have to do with Marc?
I don’t know but sooner or later, I’ll find out. Maybe she needs to get out of here for a while. That might help her work through the sadness.
Shaking the idea off, I smile at Kenyon. Today’s supposed to be a happy day. I have my family and I have my friends. I also have the ring on my finger where Kenyon stole me away for a weekend trip to Vegas where we got married. Just the two of us there.
Talk about some upset friends when they found out. But they quickly got over it when we agreed to have a party to celebrate. My father and brothers came along with Kenyon’s family.
It’s strange to think I went from not wanting to meet the man my mom said was my father to enjoying seeing him when he comes to visit. And my brothers too. My father’s wife even came the last time and I’d been a nervous wreck about meeting her, but she’d met me with open arms the day we were introduced.
Evidently, my mother’s news of losing the baby hurt my father, and he’d treated his wife like a precious jewel after they married. She knew all about my mother and didn’t mind the fact my father had been in love with another woman.
She’s kept in touch just as much as my father and brothers.
Kenyon rounds the counter and pulls me into his arms before lowering his head to capture my lips with his in a wonderful kiss.
“What are you doing here?” I ask breathlessly when he pulls his lips away from mine.
“Had to come see my aingeal álainn.” He grins.
Rolling my eyes, I lean more of my weight into him.
“And why is that?” I giggle.
“Because I fuckin’ love seeing that smile and look forward to seeing it while your stomach grows our child inside you,” he whispers, and my heart skips a beat.
“I love you too, Kenyon. So much,” I utter quietly and send a prayer up to whoever put him in my path and entangled my heart and soul with his.
It’s the best feeling in the world and I look forward to what our future holds. Ours and our family’s.
I only hope that Lillian and Zoe both find the happiness they deserve. That maybe they find it one day, hopefully, sooner rather than later.
Who knows, I did hear Kit-Kat put a pool together on who’s next. I wonder if I should get in on the action and say Zoe’s up next, and someone will ensnare her heart once and for all rather than it being constantly hurt.
The End.
