ChapterOne

“Does my bumlook big in this?” Harper Clarke twisted her torso, casting acritical eye over her appearance in her bedroom mirror.

“You lookfantastic,” said Zarya. “Stunning, in fact.”

Coming fromZarya, who had no trouble getting any man she desired with a mereflutter of her eyelashes and that haunting siren song of hers, itwas indeed a compliment of great magnitude, but Harper still wasn’tconvinced. “This is supposed to be my lucky black dress, but Idon’t remember it being this tight the last time I wore it.”

“Lucky? Thatwould be a first for you,” her friend jibed. Then she choked on herdrink.

Karma.

“Yeah, okay, soI’m not the luckiest of witches, but I can live in hope, can’t I?”She grabbed a cushion off her bed and threw it at Zarya. “I thoughtbest friends were supposed to be supportive.”

Zarya fendedoff the cushion assault with her arm. “I am. I said you lookstunning, and you do.”

Harper drainedher glass of prosecco. “Thanks.”

“You’rewelcome. So, who are you going on a date with? A Fae? An angel?”Her eyes widened like an excited child. “Ooh, a werewolf, maybe?I’m a sucker for an alpha male. Does he have a friend?”

“No, he’s not awerewolf; he’s a vampire.”

“A vamp? Areyou mad?”

“No, I’m notmad. His paperwork says he only turned four months ago, which meanshe won’t be dangerous.”

“Whatpaperwork? Wait…” It didn’t take her long to suss it out. “Oh myGod, he’s a client from your dating agency, isn’t he?”

Bingo.Harper might have known she couldn’t keep a secret from her friendfor long.

“No… yes. Hemight be.” She glanced at Zarya, noting her disapproval. “Don’tpull that face at me. I know it’s not exactly professional, but Ihaven’t been on a date in goodness knows how long, and he soundedso charming on the phone, and not at all ‘Vlad the Impaler’—”

“Wait, youarranged a blind date with a vampire?” she interrupted. “What if heis dangerous, or worse, ugly?”

“Vampires arenever ugly, everyone knows that.”

“Yeah, in themore recent movies. This is the real world, where we supernaturalshave to live surrounded by the magic veil because woe betide thehumans ever find out we live amongst them. We have the movies tothank for that,” she said, setting her lips in a tight line.

Harper held upher hands, refusing to get into the same old argument.

Zarya thoughtthe humans should know of their existence, and although some didknow, and were, on the whole, accepting of most paranormal beings,Harper came from a long line of witches, ancestors who had sufferedat the hands of humans who feared their kind.

No, the humanswere not ready to know that things really did go bump in thenight.

“Calm down,Zar, don’t get on your soapbox. Not now, when I have a date with anewbie, not-remotely-dangerous vampire. As for being ugly, there’sonly one way to find out.” She held up two lipsticks. “Whichone—ruby red, or pink mist?”

“With thosecrazy colours in your hair, I’d go with the neutral pink mist—lessto clash with.”

Harper peeredin the mirror; she had to admit she’d outdone herself this timewith the array of pastel colours in her hair. She thought it wouldbe fun to sprinkle fairy dust into the hair dye, going for an‘enchanted forest nymph’ look, but she’d ended up looking more likean explosion in a toy unicorn factory. Still, it was different, andshe kind of liked it.

“You definitelydon’t want to wear the red lipstick,” Zarya continued. “As in,anything to remind him of the colour of blood.”

“That’sridiculous.” Harper put the red lipstick back on her dressingtable—she preferred the pink anyway. “I’ve spoken to him severaltimes. Apparently, he had some questions about the forms I sent himto sign up to Magik Dates.”

“I told you allthat paperwork was antiquated and far too formal,” her occasionalemployee/bookkeeper friend told her. Occasional on account of Zaryabeing an ocean priestess and having to travel the seas for monthsat a time.

Harper held outher empty glass. “I know. Any more wine in there?” she asked, nodding at the bottle.

Zarya pouredthe last of the wine into their glasses. “I know you’re a hundredyears old, Harper, but you need to stop acting like a granny andmove into the twenty-first century.
