Mr. Connell even came around and gave me a glowing reference and a personal recommendation. Since the Connells have seen that Brett and I are serious about each other, a lot of the iciness has melted between us all, but I have to admit I’m glad we’re living in France and rarely get to see them. I still don’t think I’m quite over the glorified secretary comment.
“You like it here then?” Brett calls to me, pulling me out of my head and nodding to the restaurant.
“It’s beautiful,” I reply.
The restaurant is perfect. It has a lovely, laid back atmosphere, low lighting and lots of candles. The food is delicious too. But really, it’s not just the restaurant I’m talking about. The last seven months have been beautiful. Working in a job I love and coming home every day to Brett. Life just couldn’t get any better than this.
“And you enjoyed the food?” Brett asks.
I rub my hand across my stomach and grin. “Yes, it was amazing. I’m so full now though.”
“But you have room for a glass of champagne, right?” he queries.
“Champagne huh? Have you found the location for the next golf course?” I say, sitting forward a little.
Brett shakes his head.
“So what are we celebrating then?” I press him.
He smiles, his mouth curling up at the corners. He reaches behind him, going into his jacket pocket. He looks nervous suddenly. “Hopefully this…” He pulls something out of the pocket.
I wait, itching to know what’s going on.
Taking my hand across the table in one of his, with the other still clutching whatever he pulled from his pocket. He squeezes my hand and then he stands. Brett gets down on one knee in front of me.
I gasp, my hands going to my mouth.
He opens a small box and a gorgeous sparkling engagement ring shines from it. “Opal, I love you more every single day, and I want to spend forever with you. Will you marry me?”
“Yes, oh my God, yes,” I say, tears fill my eyes.
Brett pushes the ring onto my finger then he gets up and hugs me tightly. He kisses me.
I hold onto him, making our kiss longer, deeper, letting myself forget where we are for a minute.
Brett finally pulls back from me and retakes his seat. He smiles at me, looking into my eyes. “I’m the luckiest man on earth. I can’t believe I get to spend forever with you.”
I reach for his hand and place mine over it. “You’ve made so happy every day since we met Brett, but I think today has definitely topped them all.”
“And it’s only going to get better.” He grins. He looks around and spots our waiter. He waves him over and asks for a bottle of their best champagne.
“Of course sir,” the waiter agrees in heavily accented English.
“Do you think we could get that to go?” I ask, winking at Brett.
The waiter nods and smiles as he leaves the table,
My eyes are back on Brett, hungrily drinking him in. “I always think of champagne as more of a bedroom drink, don’t you?” I grin.
“I as sure as hell do now!” Brett laughs.
We get the champagne and settle our bill. Then we leave the restaurant hand in hand and set off towards our villa. It’s only a short walk, but it takes us over an hour to get there because we can’t keep our lips off each other, our hands off each other.
Brett once promised me he would spend every day of the rest of our lives trying to make me forget that there’s a world outside of us.
And today, he has more than achieved it.
I’m so happy I feel like I will burst and I know that our lives are only going to get better as we are committed to spending the rest of them together.
