Nobu sat before the screens, he had a bowl of popcorn in his lap and he ate as he watched the police go toward the house. He wished Imani was here to see it live, but he’d rerun the tape for her. Four patrol cars came screaming up onto the lawn of the house. He smiled and was glad the video was in color. He’d paid a good price for the cameras. Next time however, he’d make sure he could control the zoom on them. That was a blunder on his part.
She’d miss most of it, but he was sure in an hour, the cops would still be there. Maybe he should start putting micro cams at all their hits. They could look over the footage and evaluate. Just like the need for a zoom. He’d not even thought about that. He’d already shot off several captures of the van’s rear plate. His network would toss that one around until he got what he needed. His network loved puzzles and challenges, just as he did. That was why he worked with Imani. Not only to help his friend, but also to find bigger and better ways to extinct the bad guys.
He watched as several ambulances rolled up, then an unmarked vehicle with flashing lights. He watched as they brought the women out to the waiting ambulances. Paramedics attended them, and he saw several uniforms and plain clothed officers speaking to them as well. Nobu shook his head. He was glad his friend took them down and it made him want to double his efforts.
He could not see the women’s faces clearly, but he could see their bodies shaking with weeping. He didn’t know where they would have ended up. His heart broke for those they could not help, the ones who disappeared into oblivion.
He heard the door to the apartment open and he spun his chair around and smiled at Imani as she walked in. She came into the room and he opened a drawer and pulled out a black garbage bag.
“The cops have the women out, as you can see. They are talking to them before they send them off to the hospital.” Nobu said, holding the bag as Imani began to undress and discard the clothing.
“Good, I wish I could have stayed longer, but the old man got off a shot before I could put him down. I didn’t think it was wise to linger.”
“Ah well, the important thing is that the women are safe and these assholes are dead. Any other problems?”
“There was a guy in the basement with the girls. I put him down fast. There were seven of them, all chained to the wall. I can’t even imagine how many women have gone through this place. I’m glad we shut it down.”
“Me too, and I have your plate being analyzed, someone will get back with me. I was also thinking, that we should put cams on all of our hits. I’m getting a lot of good intel from watching this stuff. Police procedures and so on.” Nobu said.
Imani picked up her robe from the chair beside Nobu and put it on. She sat in her chair and grabbed the bowl of popcorn. Cramming a handful of the cold popcorn in her mouth, she looked at him, her cheek distended like a chipmunk. It was hard not to laugh at her. She grinned back, white bits all over her teeth and gums, causing him to laugh harder.
“Idiot.” He grinned.
She reached over and took a drink of his soft drink and cleared her throat.
“That’s a really good idea. I like having eyes on the target in real time. It saves me from having to actually watch the place and we can record and fast forward, saving us time.”
“It can also help with potential pitfalls, like when I saw a number of dogs in the area. Small things that could mean a big difference.” Nobu said, taking his drink back. He watched as Imani went out of the room and came back a minute later with her own drink. She sat down once more and both watched the live feed.
Two of the ambulances departed, while two more pulled up. Flashes were going off inside the house and neighbors were gathered along the street in small groups. They talked to one another, pointing at the women who sat inside the police cars. There was a line of police, standing in front of the crowd, keeping them back.
“I do so love it when a plan comes together.” Imani sighed happily, grabbing another handful.
“As do I, you did good, girlfriend.” Nobu grinned and patted his friend on the back. She did the most dangerous part of the job. If he thought he could have helped her with it, he would have. But he was useless around weapons, though he’d tried. Some people had the innate abilities of a predator, of a killer, she was one of those people. He was glad she used her skills for good, though the assassin part of the job was always questionable. But, if she didn’t do it, someone else would.
The last of the ambulances left and Imani got up and stretched.
“I’m going to bed, you should too. We can watch more of this later today.” She said, leaning down to give Nobu a hug.
“Yeah, I’m beat. Okay, sleep tight and see you in the morning, or later.” He laughed.
She left the room and he got up as well. He’d take the black garbage bag down to the incinerator, then he’d head to bed. The building’s incinerator wasn’t
