“Are you absolutely sure this is what you want?” he asked when the kiss finally ended. “A few months ago all you cared about was getting back to Wall Street.”
“I found something more challenging.”
“Acting?”
“No, you,” she told him. “I just hope you realize what you’re taking on.”
Jason grinned. “Oh, I think I’ve known what a handful you are from the beginning.”
“What about my mother?”
“I don’t think we’ll have her to worry about much longer. Mikel seems to have that situation well in hand.”
She regarded him with obvious surprise. “You knew?”
“The day before the ball game,” he admitted. “The man is totally smitten, has been for years. He assures me the Gunderson women are worth waiting for.”
“There is actually one other Gunderson woman we need to talk about,” she confessed, looking uncertain.
“Your sister?”
Callie nodded. “It seems she’s finally decided to leave that jerk she married.”
“Good for her,” Jason said approvingly.
“She’s moving to New York.”
“Uh-oh.” He searched her face. “How do you feel about that? I know you two haven’t always gotten along.”
“We did once,” Callie said, her expression wistful. Slowly a smile spread across her face. “Of course, New York does seem to be amazingly lucky for the Gunderson women, doesn’t it? Maybe Eunice will find what she’s looking for here, too.”
“And you?” Jason said. “Have you found everything you were looking for?”
Her gaze met his. “And more,” she said quietly. “Much, much more.”
Amazing, Jason thought. His golden gut had done it again. Only a genuine femme fatale could steal his heart the way Miss Calliope Jane Gunderson Smith had.
