My gaze found Cole next. He met mine with a look of concern. No one could ever read me like Cole Paisley.
I nodded to reassure him I was fine. “Just missing Beth,” I said.
“Me too,” Mom said. “But I’m at peace now. Knowing.”
I glanced back at my reflection, and a deep peace came to me then too. Everything is all right, Beth whispered in my ear. Enjoy this sweet world while you can. The best is yet to come.
I took her advice and went to the kitchen to get the apple pie. Upon my return, Brooke was laughing so hard tears streamed down her face. I stood in the doorway for a moment, taking in the happy faces around our table and the way Cole’s curls kissed his collar. A sweet life. My sweet life. Even after all we’d been through, here we were. Together. Loving one another as fiercely as we could, doing our best to make the most of the lives we’d been granted.
