Desiree

A mouse runs across the creaky hardwood floor of my room while I decide on what to wear for school. I stand on a chair so the little critter can’t run across my feet. I’m not especially scared of the mouse, but I don’t really want to touch it, either.

“I’m not Cinderella,” I tell the mouse and it starts at the sound of my voice, and then it’s gone, hidden under the bed within the blink of an eye.

Today’s the first day of my senior year, and my first day at Blackcrown High. To say that I’m nervous is an understatement. I’ve moved around a lot in my life, switching schools rapidly. One would think I’d be used to it.

And I guess I am, to an extent. I’m observant, a chameleon if you will. I can slip through the cracks mostly unnoticed, but senior year is different. The cliques will be cliquier. Students will be less likely to help out the new girl, let alone become friends with her.

Honestly, I don’t even know if I want friends. Sometimes it was too much work, being vulnerable and letting people in.

I run my fingers through my long dark hair, wondering if I should try to do something fancy with it since it’s the first day. Is there a hairstyle that says “I’m a bad bitch, please don’t fuck with me”?

Maybe Pinterest will have something in that category, I think with an eye roll. Sure, it’ll be great. I could just use an entire can of hairspray and make my hair stand up like devil horns. I’m definitely no hair guru, but I do take good care of it, so at least it’s healthy.

Yay! Silver lining.

My wardrobe consists mostly of thrift store finds, thanks to my summer job at the movie theatre. It allowed me to get some things I needed, which I’m grateful for, considering I had to quit when mom and I moved to Blackcrown Falls.

Another thing I had to give up for my parents.

I haven’t had the easiest life, but this is my last year of high school. Just nine more months of school. That’s all. Just nine more months.

It’s warm today, so I decide to pick a dress to wear. My eyes immediately fall on the emerald green sundress that used to be my favorite.

It was Chad’s favorite, too.

A lump forms in my throat, and I swallow hard. If this move brought any good, it was getting me far away from Chad.

I decide to wear the dress. It’ll feel like a nice slap in the face to him even though he won’t see me. I’m not letting him dictate any more of my life or decisions. I slide into the dress. The lace quarter-length sleeves scratch my arms a bit, but I feel a little more confident as I tie the bow at the waist. It ends about an inch above the knee and shows only a small amount of cleavage.

I slip on a pair of cute flats, grab my bookbag, and leave my room.

I pass my mom's room, and I see her passed out in bed. She works at one of the diners in town, second and third shift, so she’s usually asleep most of the day. I just hope she keeps this job longer than her last one.

Money doesn’t grow on fucking trees, after all.

Ever since my dad was sent to prison, she can’t hold a job and spends most of her nights drinking. I try to give her the benefit of the doubt, but it’s hard when it feels like I haven’t had a mother in a long time. As if she senses me watching her, she jumps awake. Tired blue eyes, same as my own, stare back at me.

“Going to work, Desiree?” she slurs, wiping the sleep from her eyes.

“No, first day of school.” I shift from foot to foot, nervously.

She swipes her hand down her face. “Right, right. Have a great day, honey.”

“Thanks, Mom,” I say awkwardly, before walking toward the front door.

Our apartment is small: only six hundred and fifty square feet, two beds, one bath, with a small living area and kitchen.

I open the door and step out into the summer heat. Sweat
