'Declassified Photos,' 30. The camouflage scheme used on the first Have Blue and F-117 is similar to the 'dazzle' finish used on ships during World Wars I and II. The idea was not to 'hide' the ships but, rather, make it difficult for a U-boat commander to determine the ship's speed and heading. On an airplane, particularly one with an odd shape, like the Have Blue and F-117, a similar effect could be expected.
