You can do this.
I make my way downstairs, following the voices to the kitchen. Rounding the corner, my heart catches. Reed and Sage stand at the stove, hips bumping as they cook together. My eyes mist at the view of them.
I must make a noise, because Sage turns around. “Well, look at you!” she teases.
“Where are you going dressed like that?” Reed asks gruffly, only to be elbowed by Sage.
“He means to say you look beautiful.”
“I’m going out for breakfast,” I tell him softly.
“Why would you go out for breakfast when we have food right here?” The confused look on his face is almost comical.
I look towards Sage, and she gives me a nod of encouragement. “I have a date. A breakfast date.”
Reed must miss my nervous look. “Which girlfriend? And you remember we’re meeting up at Sterling’s at noon, right?”
I clear my throat. “His name is Brodie, and yes, I remember. Brodie will drop me off there, and then I’ll ride home with you and Sage.”
Reed sets down his coffee cup slowly, meeting my eye. “I’m sorry, I think I misheard you. Did you say Brodie? Brodie doesn’t sound like a girlfriend.”
“Reed,” Sage warns.
Before the arguing can start, the doorbell rings. I head to the front door but stop and take a deep breath before rounding the corner.
You got this. Today’s the day.
Today I move on from Finley Abbott.
Finley Abbott, who left the country without a word to anyone. Finley Abbot, who broke my heart for the last time.
“Miss Yates, there is a suitor here for you.”
“Thank you, Boswell. You have a good day.”
“You too, Miss Yates.”
I walk towards the front door and find Brodie standing there.
Brodie, who is tall, handsome, and athletic. He listens to shitty music and wouldn’t dance if I begged him to. The perfect person to help me get over this Finley infatuation.
“Hey you.”
“Hey, you look gorgeous.” He leans in and kisses my cheek. “You ready to go?”
“I am.” I smile.
So long, Finley Abbot.
The End.
