lips followed. I swayed, leaning back against him. “You are testing my control, Sugar. Come on, we need to get your shoes, and you need to learn to walk in them, and in the dress.”

Since I didn’t trust my voice, I just nodded as I turned around. The dress was form-fitting, but it had a side slit that practically went to my hip that made walking easier. Without the heels on, the fabric touched the floor. I gathered it in my hands as best I could, holding it up, trying to keep it from getting dirty. David held the door for me, so I swept past him and into the hall, where I stopped. “Kait is waiting for you in the living room.” For some reason, David was whispering. I nodded again before hurrying down the hall to the living room.

Without knocking, I opened the door and strode into the room. Kait was softly talking to a man in a scout’s uniform, but he cut off mid-word when he saw me. “Excuse me. I’ll be right back.” He quietly said to the man before heading over to me. “Princess, you look like a princess.” There was a little bit of a laugh in his voice.

“Thanks, I think. I’m here for my shoes.” I put my hands on my hips, until I realized that it pushed my boobs out. Then, I wrapped my arms around my waist.

Kait ran his hands over my exposed shoulders, just like David had earlier. “Let me finish up with this scout, and then I’ll get your shoes, and show you how to use them.”

How to use them? That was a weird comment. I shrugged, then waited while he talked with the scout and gave him some paper and a pen. I groaned. Looks like I was going to have work waiting for me when I got back.

“Only if tonight goes horribly wrong.” You would think I would be getting used to the way he responded to unspoken thoughts, but no, I had to think about it every time. He laughed, as he pulled a pair of white four-inch stiletto heels from under the table.

“Nuh-uh. There is no way in hell I am going to be able to walk, much less fight in those.”

“Give them a chance, Princess. I think you will find these easier than you think.”

“Fine.” He smiled and came over to me. He held the shoes up to my dress, then muttered something under his breath. When he pulled them away, they matched the color of the silk perfectly. Oh. They were magic. Of course, they were.

He knelt in front of me, running his hand lightly down my calf. Lifting my foot, he slid the shoe onto it, before moving to the next leg and repeating the process. When he stood up, he trailed his fingertips up my hips, and settled his hands on my waist. He stared into my eyes for a minute before clearing his throat and stepping away.

“These heels, obviously, are spelled. They can do more than just change color. They also make it easier to walk, by having a spell that sort of invisibly widens the heels, as well as taking some of the weight off the pad of your foot. Walk across the room.”

I hesitantly took a step, then another. By the third step, I was moving more confidently.

“Good, but your foot needs to hit the floor heel-toe, not toe-heel.”

With that high of a heel, it felt totally unnatural at first, but I soon had the hang of it.

“Okay, now pretend you are walking on a line. That will give you that swishy walk.” He was sitting on the edge of the couch with his legs crossed, his elbow on his knee, and his chin in his hand, watching me. I sighed and did it again.

Kait clapped, startling me. Apprehensively, I asked, “What now?”

He jumped up, swept me into his arms, and kissed me firmly. “You have it. You are ravishing, Princess.”

I pulled back. “If you mess up my makeup, you are going to answer to Brad, because I have no idea how to fix it!”

He leaned in, his lips brushing my ear. “Don’t worry, I won’t mess it up. Until tonight.” He trailed his lips down my neck as he pulled away. I really didn’t understand how he did it. He got my motor going with two simple words. I took a deep breath.

Without acknowledging what he said, or how I reacted, I asked, “How long do we have until we have to leave for the party?” I knew it wasn’t going to be soon, because none of the guys were ready. Travis had come in while I was practicing walking and was now sitting in the corner in a t-shirt and his boxers. David had come in at the same time, and was sitting with Travis, and he hadn’t changed. They wore identical expressions, which I couldn’t define. There was something in their gaze, though, that gave me strength.

“About an hour. You have time to eat something, if you want.” Kait was reading the paper the scout had left behind. I briefly wondered when the scout had left, since I didn’t even notice him departing. “Brad will be here to touch up your makeup if you need him too, just don’t get anything on the dress. Boys, stay here. I need you to help me with something before we leave.”

Travis seemed to deflate, and David chuckled. Kait has a small smile as well. What the hell was that all about? David covered his mouth, seeming to hold in a laugh.

“Alright, y’all are being weird. I’m going to go get something non-messy to eat.”

They all waved at me on my way out of the room.

Chapter 21

As I walked down the hall to the kitchen, I thought about the guys. There was something fishy going on there. I was almost in a daze as I reached the kitchen but snapped out of it when I saw Brad
