besides marriage and motherhood. But for all that, I hope she found a special man to spend her life with.”

“Hannah can take care of herself.”

Unable to sit still any longer, Ari rose and paced the length of the room. She hoped their house still existed in Hannah’s time, but knowing how close they were to downtown, she doubted it. She felt sure Hannah would seek it out along with their little house in Ste. Genevieve. “Something has bothered me ever since Diamond came to see us. She didn’t come back with us to 1812. The crystal sent her to 1862. We always assumed Hannah would return to the twenty-first century fifteen years after she left it since that’s how long she lived here with us. It would be almost as if she had never left. But what if she didn’t? What if she traveled to the twenty-second century? Or, heaven forbid, went back in time to the seventeenth or even earlier.”

“Diamond got caught on the edge of the vortex. That’s why she didn’t go as far back as we did. Besides, I thought you had a theory about the crystal taking someone where they needed to be.”

“I do, but I’m a mother. I’m supposed to worry.”

“She’s a grown woman. Leave her a message telling her you love her somewhere you think she might find it. That’s all we can do. Love them, raise them the best we can, and let them go.”

“I married a wise man,” Ari said, letting Bryce think he’d soothed her. She would do her best to follow his advice since worrying wouldn’t help. But although she loved all her children, she had always been closest to Hannah, perhaps because of the early years when it had been just the two of them. The crystal was a family heirloom and had saved her life and Hannah’s. Still, sometimes she wished it had never come back into their lives.
