name that if I slipped, I could cover my tracks. We both knew I was lying. The look he gave me said as much, but he didn’t understand. I’d lived half my life with an alpha beating and threatening me in turn. Trust didn’t come easy for me, not even with fate binding us together.

“Not buying it, Twistie, but I’ll get your name from you soon enough.”

“Twistie?”

“It suits you.”

“Oh.”

I took a deep breath before looking back up at him. He was tall, hot, cocky, and the animal magnetism pulling between us had arousal dumping in my veins.

“Look, I’m going to be honest with you, Six,” I said, letting out a puff of air. “I don’t have time for a mate right now. It’s not a good time for me.”

Of all the things I expected, him throwing his head back and laughing at me wasn’t one of them. He had a great laugh, low and gravelly. Fuck, there wasn’t anything about him I didn’t like, except the fact that he was the leader of his people. I wanted a simple life. Alphas, presidents of motorcycle clubs, heads of families; it didn’t matter what title you gave them—they were anything but simple.

I set the beer down and moved to get up, that’s when I felt it. There was a subtle push inside my head. Concentrating, I used my own ability to push him out and disappear from his mind. He wouldn’t remember me or anything he happened to see while he had invaded my head.

“It’s been fun, Six, but I’ve got to go.”

“Hold up there, Twistie. You don’t think I’m going to let you get away that easily, do you?”

It was my turn to laugh. “I don’t believe I gave you a choice.”

Before I could leave, Six spun me back into his arms and claimed my lips in a hard kiss. His smell surrounded me, and his taste intoxicated me. My body melted against him, the fox buried deep inside me was turning over and begging for him to claim all of me. Adrenaline zipped through my veins, and the animal need inside me took over. I’d never felt the need for anyone the way I felt it for this man, this biker—my mate.

He groaned against my lips, his chest rattling with what sounded like a purr coming from deep inside him. Holy shit! His cat was a beast. I could feel the vibrations against my chest, and my fox responded as much as my pussy did. I felt myself dampen as arousal and need circulated through my body. Damn, he was tempting. I sighed, accepting his kiss and touch, demanding more. I never wanted it to end.

“Tonight, Six. No claiming marks. No promises.” I could hear the lie in my own voice, so I knew he heard it as well. “I need you to promise me; otherwise, this ends here and now.”

Six’s eyes were glowing, vibrant yellow-green color. “For now,” Six nodded agreement. “For now, I’ll give you what you want, but there will come a day that I’ll claim you as mine.”

I swallowed hard. “I hope you’re right.” And I did. I wanted that to happen because if he could claim me, that meant Mom and I were away from Malcolm.

I followed Six in my car, refusing to leave it parked at the game room. The ring I’d stolen from King was hidden under the fabric of the seat cover. I knew it was stupid to be following him back to his place, but one night of freedom was too much to pass up. Feeling free, protected, and safe was something I didn’t get to experience often, so this was my chance to store up that feeling. Also, the feeling of being wanted. For so long, I’ve felt like a burden, abandoned, and only around for what I could do for someone else.

Six didn’t know about my ability, not really. My mate didn’t know everything I could do, even if he’d witnessed some things. He only wanted me because we were mates. The pull between us was undeniable and told me that we were meant to be together. I knew that this was bound to be a mistake, but for one night, I was going to try to pretend that we could be more—we could be forever.

The building we pulled up in front of was on the outskirts of town. My pulse quickened with the enormity of what I was about to do. I didn’t move from my car after pulling in. I just stared at the building that had bikes lined up in front of it. The lot was lit up, and I could hear the music that was inside the building. The knock on my window brought my attention to Six standing there looking in at me, his eyes hooded with lust.

“You coming, Twistie?”

I took a deep breath and opened the door, nervously wishing for the butterflies in my belly to settle, hoping against hope that I was strong enough to walk away come morning.

“Yes.” I took his outstretched hand and let him lead the way.

When we walked through the door, I hesitated as my senses went on high alert. Six squeezed my hand reassuringly and pulled me into the den.

“You want a drink?” he asked, noting my nervousness.

“Sure,” I said, looking around the room. The men looked at me with curiosity and some of the women with open hostility. “I don’t think she likes me being with you,” I whispered. The guy behind the bar smirked at my softly whispered statement.

Six looked over his shoulder in the direction I had indicated with a tilt of my head. “Nikki will get over it.” He rolled his eyes and handed me a beer. I was hoping for something with a little more kick, but took the offered drink.

“We may be fated mates, Six, but if you’ve got something going on with her…” I let my sentence trail off when he pulled me against his body.

“We are
