for a mate.

Protect her, protect our Mate. The cat growled in my head, making me wish I could punch him in his furry face. We had an agreement, no mates, now this fucker wants to claim some tiny, beautiful, sexy, smart mouthed, human. Sonofabitch!

“RUN!” She tried to scream right before the wolf slammed her head into the brick building. I heard the squelching noise her skull made against the brick, smelled the blood, and saw her whole body go limp. My cat tore through my skin faster than ever before and his sights were set on the wolf who killed its Mate. He didn’t even have time to change as he leaped across the distance separating us in one jump. I could already taste his blood on my tongue and rumbled with the satisfaction of knowing I was going to kill my Mates murderer. My claws sliced through his skin like a hot knife through butter, ripping and tearing him to shreds. His screams filled my ears, but I was fueled by vengeance, there was no mercy for him, only death.

“Fuck, Fuck, Fuck!!! WRAITH! Wraith, he’s dead, stop! William, I told you to keep him out of trouble, what the ever-loving fuck happened? Wraith for fucks sake!” Rooster’s voice penetrated my bloodlust enough to make me sit back on my hind legs and stare down at what was left of the wolf. What was left looked like something out of a horror film and my cat hummed with pride. Everything that had been inside his body was now strewn all over the concrete alleyway. The human part of me revolted at the sight, but the predator inside me reveled in it. Huddling into myself I changed back, blood covered my entire body, as I turned towards my crew reading to explain myself when I heard her whimper.

Rushing to her side I could feel her pulse, but it was very weak. “We need to get her to a hospital now! Who brought the truck?” Turned to find several sets of eyes staring back at me with questions churning in them. “Didn’t you hear me? I said we need to get her to a hospital right now!”

“Wraith man, she’s too far gone, she won’t make it.” Rooster explained, and I hissed at him when he tried to take her from me. The Kid talked to him in hushed tones, and Rooster gave me a wane sympathetic smile that said he was sorry.

A yowl of pain permeated from my chest as I held her against me. Her head lulled back against the curve of my arm and I brushed her hair out of her face. Her scent overwhelmed my senses, I craved her body next to mine. Save her, save our Mate, change her. No, I couldn’t do that to her, I couldn’t put a monster inside her. SAVE HER! We didn’t even know each other, how could I do that to her, bind her to me for life. I sat there naked holding her while I listened to her battle for each breathe but I couldn’t bring myself to give her that burden. My insides were gutted, my cat thrashed against me begging me to change her, but how could I give this sweet angel a demon.

“Wraith, we need to get the hell out of here. We cleaned up, but we can’t stay out here in the open like this. The other wolves might bring back the whole fucking pack.” Rooster tried to coax me up, but neither I nor my animal were ready to let go of her just yet. Her, I didn’t even fucking know her name, if only she weren’t human, if only she weren’t so frail.

“Wraith, whatever you are thinking man, don’t do it. You don’t really want to do that, it’s just your guilt over her death.” What the fuck did Rooster know? She was mine damn it, she belonged with me, and with that thought in my head I let my cat have his way. Pulling her towards me, I rubbed my lips against her throat and shoulder, the bruising already deep purple from the maniac wolf’s hands.

Biting down on her neck, at the shoulder, her sweet taste filled my senses. It was like warm honey with a hint of something spicy, and it made me crave her body.  I sat back watching her and I prayed. Something I never did, but I prayed that it wasn’t too late, that it would work, that my bite would bring her back to me, back to us. My cat purred his approval loudly as I cradled her limp body against mine rubbing my nose against her face. Rooster was livid, he was pacing in front of me growling, but I gave zero fucks what he thought, he didn’t understand. I blocked out everyone else’s voices, their inner and outer ones both and concentrated solely on my angel.

Holding her close to my body, I waited on bated breath to feel the first stirrings of the change within her. Rooster crouched down in front of us, “This probably isn’t going to work. You know, that right? The chances of her taking the change are slim. Typically, only mates survive.”

“She’s my mate Roost, I don’t know how, and I don’t understand it completely, but my cat knows she’s ours. Fuck, I didn’t want this, but I guess fate had other plans.” I brushed her hair, I tried to memorize every detail of her perfection, just in case my hail Mary didn’t work. Changes started happening, the bruises on her throat started to heal, turning greenish brown.

I looked up at Rooster, hoping he was seeing the same thing I was, and it wasn’t just my hopeful imagination. The shock written across his face was proof enough for me he saw it too. “Fuck me running.” He swore on a laugh as he ran his hands through his hair. “Slash run back to the clubhouse ASAP; we need the truck like five minutes
