“Oh?” Kendra whispered. Her heart began to beat rapidly again.
“Relax,” my mom smiled sweetly at Kendra then dug into her purse. She pulled out a small light tan leather pouch. She handed it to Kendra.
“Thank you.”
“You have to open it before you can thank me,” my mom laughed.
Kendra quickly opened the pouch and poured the contents into her hand. It was a Native American necklace with a turquoise charm on it and a beaded bracelet. I recognized the craftsmanship of both pieces of jewelry as being from the Howlers.
“They are beautiful,” Kendra smiled. Her eyes were locked on the jewelry she held. I grabbed the necklace and untied it. Kendra pulled her hair up off her neck. I put the necklace on her and she released her hair. “I love it.”
Kendra picked up the charm on the necklace. She rolled it between her fingertips.
“The turquoise was blessed by the shaman of the wolf shifters. It will keep you safe,” my mom smiled.
“Wolf shifters?” Kendra asked in confusion.
“Despite how others are, we are close to the neighboring wolf pack. They are kind people,” my father said in his usual fatherly tone. “Roark, I am disappointed that you have not yet introduced your mate to the Howlers.”
Truth be told, I had been meaning to take her. Time just seemed to slip by.
“While I am here, I will take her,” my dad said. not giving any of us a choice. “If you are okay with that, Kendra?”
“Of course,” she looked up at him. “I’d love that.”
Hearing my dad talk to Kendra was a shocker. He was compassionate with her. He didn’t treat her like he treated the rest of us. With Banshee, the others, and me, he was a force to be reckoned with. There was no asking us if we wanted to do something or go somewhere with him. He simply ordered it. Not with Kendra. He treated her like she was a flower.
“Good. Then it’s settled. I will take you and Koroleva with me,” he said looking at Banshee. He smiled tenderly at Banshee, who was basically jumping with joy.
“Really? I wouldn’t be intruding?” Banshee asked.
“Why would you be intruding?” my dad frowned. “You are both my daughters,” my dad said firmly then walked inside leaving the rest of us with our mouths gaped open.
“Better close your mouths before a fly flies in there,” my mother teased. She grabbed Kendra and Banshee’s hands and led them inside.
“Hey, she’s my mate!” I called out behind my mom. She looked over her shoulder and glared at me.
“Stop being stingy. I want to spend time with my two daughters and grandchild,” she griped at me.
We all stopped walking.
“What?” Kendra, Banshee, my dad, and I said together. My mom let go of Banshee’s hand and rubbed Kendra’s stomach.
“This beautiful child here,” my mom smiled at Kendra’s stomach.
“Mom, it’s a bit soon to be–” My mom’s frown made me shut up. She looked back and forth between Kendra and me and then laughed.
“You honestly didn’t know?”
Kendra began to blush.
“I wasn’t sure,” Kendra whispered. My mom rubbed Kendra’s stomach again and smiled. “So, I am?”
“Yes, dear. You are,” my mom whispered and then hugged Kendra. “You’re going to be a wonderful mother.”
I felt like I was living outside my body watching the entire scene. It all seemed surreal. Kendra was pregnant? How did I not hear the baby’s heartbeat?
“Roark, you forget that I can read auras,” my mom sighed. “Thirty-six years as my child, and you’ve learned nothing.” She shook her head and rolled her eyes. “Let’s leave these two alone so they can talk.”
“I agree,” my father said and took hold of my mom’s hand. “We’ll be in the living room.” I couldn’t speak so I simply nodded as I watched them walk off. Banshee rubbed Kendra’s stomach.
“I’m going to be an aunt!” Banshee smiled. “I’ll teach you how to fight so you aren’t weak like your daddy.”
“Hey,” I growled. Banshee winked at me, hugged Kendra, and then scurried off down the hallway. Kendra slowly turned and looked at me. She smiled weakly.
“Are you disappointed?” she whispered.
“Disappointed?” My eyebrow rose.
“Yes,” she nodded. “Disappointed that I’m pregnant and we haven’t been married that long.”
“Kendra,” I said, holding her face gently and looking down into her eyes. “This is the second happiest day of my life.”
“Really?” she asked sheepishly. I shook my head and smiled.
“Really. The first day was when you agreed to be my wife. And now today, knowing that you are carrying my child.”
“Oh, Roark!” She wrapped her arms around my neck and held onto me. “I was so scared.”
“Sweetheart,” I kissed the top of her head. “You have nothing to be afraid of when you are with me. We are in this life together. There’s nothing we can’t take on together.”
“I love you,” she whispered.
“And, I love you in this lifetime… and the next.”
