him following right on my heels.

Turning away from the way I’d come I headed for the last building. The one I hadn’t been able to check before everything went to hell. I debated on going inside to finish my job but the sound of shouts and vehicles behind me forced my feet to move faster.

Just as I rounded the building my ears caught a soft sound. It was coming from a small shed which had been hidden by the larger building and had me skidding to a stop. The odd chuckling sound – what the hell type of cat was he – erupted behind me and I swung toward the other shifter as I morphed back into my human form.

“Someone’s in there.” I pointed at the shed and moved toward it.

“We need to leave, Koroleva,” Chance hissed at me.

“Not until I see what it is…” A bang sounded from the far end of the building and I froze. “Shift,” I hissed.

“Check around the front, Mark, and I’ll double-check our hostage.” The voice echoed down the side of the metal building.

Fuck! I knew someone needed help in that shed. Shifting, I pushed at Chance until I had him against the wall. I didn’t have time to explain or even to second guess what I was doing. I dug deep inside and pulled up the magic that made me who I was. My skin itched and burned as I felt the change wash over me. I pressed harder against Chance and made sure my body was completely covering his.

“Damn idiots. Fucking around with wild animals and now everyone is in an uproar.” The man passed right by us and approached the shed.

I watched as he pulled a padlock away from the wood door as he slid in a key.

My thoughts raced. Should I attack once the door is open to save the hostage, leave and bring some of the others back, or just wait until the man leaves and break in now without the others?

“Please… no…” the soft rasping voice and the scent of another shifter came from inside as the door opened.

“Shut up. It’s time for your meds,” the man snapped as he pushed inside.

Something rose inside of me. It was a whirlwind. Untamable. And, I couldn’t have stopped myself from reacting. I pushed away from Chance and flew at the shed. I shifted in mid-leap and fell onto the asshole just as he pulled out the syringe from his pocket.

My arm wrapped around his neck and I pulled it tight and waited. A chokehold… five… three… one. His head fell forward and cracked against the floor as I let him go.

Rising from his body, I turned to the girl on the floor. She had handcuffs locking her to the wall. I reached out and snapped the cuffs.

“Fuck,” Chance cursed behind me.

“They’ve been drugging her. Can you carry her?” I looked over my shoulder and my mate nodded as he walked around me to scoop up the girl. “I’ll run point,” I said as I slid through the open door.

Everything was quiet as I looked both ways. The earlier ruckus appeared to have calmed down. But the asshole in the shed would be missed soon.

The coast was clear so I waved Chance to follow as I made my way silently along the side of the shed.

"I cut an escape in the fence… this way," I spoke so softly only another shifter would have heard me. It was something Roark and I had practiced and all of the club knew to listen for voices on the wind. Hopefully, Chance caught my instructions as we made our way down the back of the building.

We were almost clear of the building and ready to head into a small copse of trees when the door the guy in the shed had exited opened.

"Vinny should have returned by now."

"He's probably just having a bit of fun," someone cackled and the air on the back of my neck rose.

"The boss said not to touch her, Mark."

The conversation continued and I quickly turned to Chance. "Quick. Huddle down as small as you can around her," I hissed and continued when his mouth opened, "no time to explain, just do it."

After a pause, Chance did as I asked and I quickly shifted. My body was larger in my feline form and I was hoping I could cover the two human forms wrapped together. Jealousy flared and I pushed it down. Now wasn't the time to be protective of my mate.

Digging down deep, I pushed at the familiar ball of fire inside of me. The magic surged and shot through me. As the stinging vibration consumed my skin, I pushed it harder than I ever had. I stretched it and expanded it as I sent it out to Chance.

Not sure if I could allow Chance to disappear the same way I was able to do; all I could do was hope. Earlier I’d shielded them from view, but this time, I was transferring my powers to Chance and the girl in his arms. I'd never used my abilities to hide another from detection in this way, so didn’t know if it would work, but I was willing to try.

"What the fuck?" Chance's voice filled my mind. I jerked at the unfamiliar intrusion.

I knew some of the guys could speak mind to mind, but no one had ever been able to connect with me in this way before. Was it the fact that I was including him in my bubble of protection or was it deeper – was it because he was my mate?

"Chance…" I called out to him in my mind, concentrating hard on making contact.

"Koroleva?" Chance appeared as shocked as I was. Unfortunately, we didn't have time to figure things out at the moment.

"As soon as he passes, we move," I ordered.

"He'll see us," the concern was evident in his tone.

"He won't. Just be silent and still until he passes." Exhaustion pushed at me and I gritted my teeth
