through the back of the hotel. “You have a huge crowd of people hoping to see you,” she says. “It’s crazy out there.”

When the car pulls around the front, the crowd spills into Union Square.

“All of this is for us?” Tinsley asks.

Then I spot the signs that worry me.

Landon Walsh is a murderer and baby killer.

Give Heather’s parents some closure. Tell them where her body is.

Where is Heather McCoy?

I sit back and turn away from the windows. I don’t want people to see me. Yolanda speaks into a radio. I think the crowd is making her nervous.

Suddenly there are police cars in front of us and behind us.

Tinsley relaxes in her seat. “Wow, that was intense.”

“I hope this is going to ease up a bit,” I fret as we drive back to The Adams.

“Jim and Fiona will be meeting you at your apartment,” Yolanda says.

I nod.

The police cars flank us to my building, where the press is camped at the garage door. We make it past them to get inside, and I see two of Jim’s men move in behind the Range Rover to prevent anyone from entering the garage. The horrible signs and crazy crowds are behind me. Immediately I feel better.

“Let’s get you guys in quickly,” Yolanda says.

My phone is ringing. It’s my mother. I’m sure she watched the live stream of the presentation and has sent it to all her friends. If we had a fan club, she’d be president.

I answer. “Hey, Mom.”

“Landon, you did fantastic today. Your dad and I are so proud of you, Claire, and Tinsley.”

“Thanks, Mom.” I get out of the car, and we’re walking to the elevator.

It’s hard to understand her underground. I’m getting every other syllable.

“We…jury…out…love…”

Aaannnd, I’ve lost the call. I’ll call her back in a bit.

Ultimately, I’m feeling good. After Jim and Fiona give us their speeches about crowd control, I’m going to ravish Tinsley and put her to bed for the next week. We’re only going to wake up for sex and sustenance. We can hide in our apartment until the press loses interest.

When we exit the elevator, there are a lot more people from Clear Security in my apartment than I was expecting. I guess this thing is serious.

“Did you see how well it went?”

Jim shakes my hand. “It was a great afternoon. I’m so happy for you both.”

“Thanks. We’re excited, too,” Tinsley replies with a yawn.

“Were those crowds just for today, or can we expect them for a while?” I ask.

Jim looks over at Fiona, and immediately I know there’s something coming I’m not going to like.

“Let’s sit down,” Fiona says. She walks over to the living room and pours a glass of my favorite bourbon. She hands it to me. The room has fallen silent.

“What’s going on?” The tension crackles in the air.

“The FBI has convened a grand jury about Heather McCoy’s disappearance,” Fiona announces.

I look at her. Why would they do that? Then it hits me like a ton of bricks. “To convict me?”

Tinsley immediately interlaces her fingers with mine.

Jim leans forward on his elbows. “I’m afraid so.”

“What does Marci know?” I demand.

“Nothing yet,” Fiona replies softly.

“Shit. She told me they don’t move forward unless they’re certain they can convict.”

I’m trying to reason how I could be convicted of a crime I didn’t commit. Does this mean I’ll be deported? What about my company? What about Tinsley? Is Claire going to be dragged into this? This must be a ploy to take our company away.

“Marci will be by in the morning,” Fiona says. “I don’t want you to worry about this.”

Is she crazy? I didn’t do anything, and I’m being framed. Of course I’m going to worry about this.

Chapter 39

Tinsley

I watch Landon sink into a giant, black hole. His shoulders round, his brilliant, milk chocolate eyes darken, and the lines around his eyes and mouth deepen.

I don’t blame him, but we’ve come off an incredible day. We’ve announced to the world that we’re changing the way we communicate, and it’s a big deal.

I look at Jim. I’ve been around enough attorneys to know how they talk. “How can they move forward without a body? Has your team found Heather’s body, and you haven’t told us?”

Jim shakes his head. “No, we haven’t found her, but we believe she’s alive. We’re trying to piece together where.”

“Who’s putting pressure on them to go to the grand jury?” I ask. “Because if it’s Walker Clifton, I’ll march right down to his office and get in his face.”

Jim smiles. “We can’t tell who’s pushing for this, but we know it’s not coming from Walker. Marci was on her way over to figure out what’s going on.”

Jim steps away to take a brief call and returns. “If anyone can get to Walker Clifton, Marci can. She seems to be the only attorney in San Francisco who isn’t scared of him.”

“That’s because they all have political aspirations, and she doesn’t,” Fiona says.

Landon looks around the room at the half-dozen people gathered in his apartment. He lowers his voice. “I can have the jet fueled up and ready to go in less than an hour. I can be over the Canadian border in three hours, and I can hop from there to anywhere in the world.”

My pulse increases. If he runs, he looks guilty, and there isn’t a bone in my body that tells me he’s guilty. This is a frame.

Fiona’s eyes grow wide. “I don’t recommend that. I know it seems easy to run right now, but I have to believe that with Jim’s team and Marci, we’re going to be fine.”

That may be true, but I know Landon must feel everything he’s worked for slipping
