“Well, jeez. It had better be my child. Otherwise, we might actually have a big problem.”
I lifted my head and studied him, unsure what to think about his answer.
“Did you even hear what I said? I'm not joking, you know.”
“Pretty sure you're not the type to joke about such things.”
He joined me on the bed. His warmth was a comfort, as it had always been. Still, it did little to ease my pounding heart.
I rolled over to face him, unable to take the tension anymore. Instead of looking angry, there was an expression on his face I'd never seen before. He seemed to be staring at the wall, deep in thought.
“You're upset,” I said, hoping to pull something, anything, out of him. I couldn't deal with the silence.
“I'm a bit shocked,” he admitted. “But I did consider the possibility. I mean, you not drinking your margarita? Clear sign something's not right.”
His hand settled gently on my tummy again. I thought of the baby in there, and of Asher, and how much I realized I wanted a family with him.
“I'm going to keep it,” I blurted. “It feels like the right thing to do. I know that sounds silly. It probably is. If you want to leave, I mean, I get that.”
“Sarah.” He put a finger to my lips. “Calm down.”
Calm down? How was I supposed to do that?
He snuggled up close beside me. Normally, that made me feel so loved. Now, I didn't know what to feel.
“You told me so many times how you didn't like kids. You never wanted any.”
“After that girl pissed on me while I was playing Santa, the idea didn't sound too appealing, no.”
My stomach sank. I braced myself for it, for him to say he'd rather get divorced than raise a baby.
“But,” he added, “Remember what else I said? Maybe, with the right woman...”
What?
“It might not be so bad after all.”
I could hardly believe what I was hearing. I did remember him saying that, the day we cracked into Heath's safe. Of course, I didn't truly think he meant it.
“You're the right woman, Sarah. I'd never have married you if you weren't.”
“So you're saying – ”
He pulled me into his embrace and squeezed me tight. Tears began to fall again, but for good reasons this time.
“The thought of raising a family with you doesn't scare me. It makes me happy. So I agree with you; this baby does feel right.”
I'd worried myself sick over nothing. Just like that, all my fears were gone.
“When should we tell everyone? Our families are going to be thrilled.”
“We'll tell them soon enough.” He reached to turn out the light. “But for now, it'll be our secret. Just the three of us.”
Asher, me, and the baby. Who would have ever imagined? If someone told me I'd one day want to have Asher's kids, I'd have laughed in their face. Ridiculous, then.
Now we were truly a family, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
