Weddings aren’t usually my thing, and I wouldn’t be attending this one if it wasn’t for my friend Shane. He started a security agency when he left the Marines and his girlfriend, Effie, is a wedding planner. So collaborating together on big wedding events works great for them. She plans the wedding, he provides the security. It’s a perfect match. I’m happy they have found each other and they’re building a life and business together. Except now, they’re drawing me into their perfect little world too.
Shane has a dedicated team that works with him, but today, he has two guys who haven’t shown up at the last minute. There’s a stomach bug that’s been going around and it’s wiped out half his manpower. Shane called me this morning and practically begged me to take their place.
So I guess I’m doing him a favor.
I’d do a lot for Shane, I really would. We were in the Alpha Mavericks Brigade together. We have both been on several tours. We’ve seen some crazy shit and we’ve had each other’s backs all the way through. We’ve saved each other’s lives, for crying out loud. Working together to provide security at a wedding is going to be a piece of cake.
“Just put on a suit, man,” he told me over the phone when I accepted the job.
I can’t remember the last time I wore a suit. Thankfully, I found one at the back of my closet and it looked alright for the occasion. As always, Shane has everything planned out to the last detail. It would be very difficult to fuck up a plan like this even if I tried.
He has put me in charge of the team that will be watching over the indoor set-up. He and a few others will be outside. The weddings that Effie plans tend to be high-profile. She works with couples who are minor celebrities and social climbers, so security and privacy are always very important at these events. It’s perfect for Shane’s growing business so I don’t want to let him down, even though it’s not my scene.
I arrive early at the venue and Shane introduces me to the rest of the team. I can sense how the others look up to Shane and to me too because of our military experience. It’s nice to be respected too.
Soon enough, the guests start to arrive and everybody is taking their place. The ceremony will begin in an hour; Effie and her team are running around making sure everything is perfect and going smoothly.
It makes me want to laugh. All this drama. Money. Endless food and drink. Expensive clothes on expensive people…for what? A wedding ceremony that will be over in a few hours. What if you don’t marry the right person? What if you’ve just tied yourself to a person who you will grow to resent? Is that a risk I am ever willing to take?
I haven’t met that woman yet. The one who will bring me to my knees and make me forget my doubts. Maybe I will someday, but I doubt it'll be any time soon.
I stand guard near the entrance, watching everybody move around and interact. Weddings always irritate me and now I remember why. It’s because they remind me of how I am not built for marriage.
Lena
The only reason I’m even at this wedding is because I have nothing else to do. I know I got an invite because Melanie went to high school with me and she invited the whole class. I’m the only one who’s turned up out of the girls invited.
Melanie used to be the popular girl back in high school. Everyone wanted to be like her, wanted to hang with her, wanted to copy her. I wasn’t exactly her friend, but did she really have any friends? It seems not, considering none of them are here.
All those people who treated her like a Goddess back then have abandoned her on her big day. Maybe the truth is that nobody actually liked her, and now they don’t have to pretend to.
When I knock on her changing room door and I’m ushered in by one of her sisters, Melanie springs up off her seat and rushes to me.
“Lena! You made it! Are the others here?” she asks with excitement. When she hugs me I can feel her desperation.
“I’m not sure. Looks like they’re all running a bit late. I just wanted to pop in and congratulate you in person, in case I have to slip out early.”
She is holding my hands and looking a little sad. Damn it! Why do I care how she feels? Even though I wasn’t bullied by her, I saw a lot of other kids go through it back at school. I shouldn’t feel any kind of sympathy for her today.
Besides, isn’t she marrying some millionaire-type sugar daddy? I’m sure she’ll be fine.
“You have to stay for the whole thing, Lena, promise you’ll stay! I’m sure you’ll enjoy the dance floor. We’ve got an awesome band.” While Melanie speaks, one of her bridesmaids fixes her hair. She is looking at me with her big droopy eyes and I wish I
