NORAD announced, “Splinter one has burned up on reentry, we repeat, splinter one has burnt up.”
President Lanoha asked, “Are we safe from the rest of the splinters?”
NORAD replied, “No, sir. I’m sorry. Most are much larger and will reenter, they may enter at a different location than we expected because they’re skipping when they hit the upper atmosphere. We might have a chance of hitting them as they come down with our SAMs and ABMs. The Navy’s SM-3 surface to air missile has taken out satellites traveling at 17,000 Mph and it is designed to take out ballistic missiles. We can’t guarantee they will work, but it’s worth a try. We have Patriot and THAAD batteries we’re moving to the cities as fast as we can.”
“I like it, at least it’s something. I’ll announce we’re setting up missile batteries and we’re going to try to blow up the splinters, I know all we’re going to do is break up large rocks into smaller ones but I’d rather have small ones fall on our heads then large ones. How many missiles do we have?”
“If we count everything, we have over four hundred.”
“Get them positioned. You have my permission to fire as soon as you get a lock on any rock. Pass your idea to the Russians and the Chinese, maybe they’ll be able to knock a few down.”
“Yes, sir. Sir, what about the large rock?”
“Do you have any new ideas?”
“No, sir. We’re looked at everything and we couldn’t come up with anything that may work, and by that, I mean, nothing that even had a one percent chance.”
“Keep thinking out of the box.”
“Mr. President, we haven’t been in the box since we started this process.”

The President held an encrypted video conference with his cabinet, “You all know what’s coming and the odds say the big one is going to strike the Earth. We’re not sure of where but the scientists are all agreed that there’s nothing we can do to stop it, and when it hits it’s going to throw enough debris into the atmosphere to block the sun’s rays from reaching the ground. Some of the scientists are saying some of the aftereffects of the strike will be earthquakes and volcano eruptions along the ‘Ring of Fire’ in the Pacific. If it strikes the ocean, we’re going to lose every coastal city and everything for at least a hundred miles from the coast. All of the experts agree on one thing, the debris is going to block the sun which is going to lead to a new ice age. They can’t agree on how bad it’s going to be, but they do agree the northern third of our country and all of Canada is going to be affected and by affected, I mean under glaciers and many feet of snow and ice. None of the cities in the path of the glaciers will survive.
“I’m going to go out on a limb here and say if we assume and we all know what assume means, the so-called experts are correct then we’re looking at the largest population relocation in history. We’re looking at having to move over 175 million people. Think of that number! 175 million!
“Here’s the questions all of you need to review and have plans for. Drop everything else and I mean drop everything else and work on the answers to these questions, where are we going to put them, how are we going to get them wherever we are sending them? If the temperature really does drop as they say, how can we protect our fuel supplies and what about food and water? Won’t the water freeze, will our fuel supplies freeze, how will we feed everyone when we lose the breadbasket which reminds me, as of this minute, all foreign food and grain sales are canceled due to the national emergency. We will buy up every barrel of grain, and every feed animal. Joe, you’re in charge of agriculture, get it done. Dennis, you’re HHS, make sure we have proper medical facilities for everyone. Ray, you're Interior, find locations to move our people to. All of you, plan on two scenarios, one the rock lands in the ocean and we lose our coastal cities and the north south freeways that run along the coast, and two it lands on the ground. Either way, expect the faults to let go. Does anyone have any questions?”
“Sir, what about the troops?”
“We’re going to meet on that subject in a couple of hours.”
The Secretary of HHS asked, “Sir, isn’t it possible there’s a third scenario, that the rock splits and part lands in the water and part on land?”
“You’re correct, I suggest we use the third scenario for our planning. We have to find a way to move two thirds of our population and we may end up having to absorb Canada’s population too. This is going to be a project larger than World War Two, this will be the largest project any government has ever attempted. We don’t have much time and we don’t want to panic our people before we have to. If no one else has any suggestions, get to work.”
