watched her through the rain, his yellow eyes meeting her azure gaze, and she was tempted to plow him under.

Bruno shifted in his seat next to her, and she realized that killing him wasn’t a luxury she could afford right now. It pained her to do it, her desire to exact revenge burning through her like a fire, but she had passengers both in her vehicle and the one behind her who needed her to focus on getting them out alive.

In the street, she immediately swung south, and found that there were far fewer dead than there had been before. Most of them were in the Park, she realized, and shifted gears to get more speed.

"We got some on us, I think," Bruno said, looking up at the roof.

"Get rid of them," she told him.

He nodded and moved to the hatch, stepping over Caroline as he went. A moment later, she heard the shotgun sound off twice, and he ducked back down, shaking rain and bits of the dead out of his hair. He gave her a thumbs-up and she nodded in return.

Glancing towards the Park, she saw one of the giants heading her way, intending to cut her off, or just step on them, she wasn't sure. Looking back, she saw Tanner had given her a few feet of room, probably nervous to be trailing her so close, knowing her driving style as he did.

She smiled and let off the gas a little, weaving through the wreckage in the road, watching the giant as he stepped clear of the Park, reaching for her. At the last moment, she hit the gas, surging forward, and ramming the plow through the side of its foot. She got a satisfying howl as it staggered and fell back into the Park, leaving them clear driving ahead.

Not that it was clear, she knew, just full of regular walking dead, instead of giant walking dead. Everything was relative, she supposed. Regardless, she forged ahead, plowing through them, trying to get clear. She had little time before the other giants would be on her and needed to put as much distance between them as she could get.

A single swat from those inhuman hands and their escape would be cut tragically short, she knew. She almost wanted to sigh in relief as she watched them grow smaller in the side mirror, but it was far too early for that. They had a lot of ground to cover, and already the Shamblers not in the Park were lurching towards them, mindlessly trying to bog the massive truck down with their sheer numbers.

She lost track of time quickly as she wove through the streets, outrunning the dead. She lost track of direction, just trying to stay ahead, and gain ground on them as they pursued she and her fellow escapees. In the rain, and the suddenly unfamiliar streets, it was all she could do, and she knew it.

"Hey, Bunny, can you hear me?" Tanner's voice came from the radio in the dashboard.

She lifted the handset. "I hear you."

"I think we lost them," he said. "Where are we?"

"No idea. There were so damn many of them in the streets, I couldn’t head straight to Midway,” she replied, looking around for any familiar landmarks.

"Rain's let up," Bruno observed as he scanned through the window.

She nodded. "Let's stop up here on this bridge. Maybe we can get a clearer view of where we are."

"Copy," Tanner said.

A moment later, they brought the heavy vehicles to a stop and cautiously exited. Behind them, what seemed miles away, they could see the smoke from the fires in the Park rising up. They all took it in for a moment, each of them struggling to accept that they had somehow escaped alive.

"I think I see the airport," York called from the edge of the bridge.

"Where?" Bunny asked.

He pointed and she saw it as well. A jumbo jet heading upward, taking to the sky. Another followed it moments later, then a third. They were no more in the air then a military cargo plane joined them. She sighed heavily as she leaned on the guardrail, watching them as they circled to the south and headed away, vanishing from sight before long.

"Guess we missed our ride," Angel said softly.

"Looks like," Gorman agreed.

"So, what now?" Bruno asked, looking to Bunny.

She shook her head. "Stay alive as long as we can. Look for other survivors. Not much else we can do."

"Sounds like a plan," Tanner agreed.

Bruno swung his shotgun up suddenly, a movement at the end of the bridge alerting him. Everyone followed suit, readying themselves to fire and run. Bunny slowly lowered her sidearm as Marco came into sight, carrying the bow she’d last seen him with.

He paused, raising his hands at the number of weapons aimed his way. Bunny shook her head and walked towards him, ignoring the calls from her friends to stop. They hadn't met him, except Tanner, who she heard giving an all clear.

"You must run really fast," she said to him.

"Nah." Marco smiled. "I just don't get tired."

She held out her hand, which he shook warmly. Looking over her shoulder, she told the others, "It's just Marco. He's with me. Any problems?"

No one said anything and she nodded, waving him to follow her back. He took a moment to admire the military machines in the road then waved as Bunny introduced him to the others.

"You got a plan?" he asked when she finished.

"Yeah, sort of," she said. "We're getting the hell out of Dodge for starters. Chicago belongs to the dead now, and the only thing left for us here is to join them. I’d rather not do that.”

He nodded. "Good plan, I like it."

"You coming?"

He looked at the living people with her for a moment. "If
