"We will," she said, leveling a gaze on the others that dared them to argue.
When no one did, she nodded, saying. "First, though, I need to find a department store and get some clothes. I don't plan to run through the rest of the apocalypse with my tits hanging out."
"I'm okay with it," Tanner said, getting a smack to the head from Gorman.
"Me, too," Caroline offered with a smile.
Tanner gawked. "Aw, Goddamn it. That's just not fair!"
Bunny couldn't help but laugh. Through all the horror, blood, death and violence, she knew they had to smile sometime, or they’d all go insane. If they didn't laugh, even when it was least appropriate, then they had little too nothing to live for, and live they must.
As they headed for their new homes on wheels, she looked back towards the airport one last time thankful Randy and the others had made it out. From here, she felt the road was going to get rough, and the future grim. It gave her hope, the thought that somewhere out in the world her friends were safe.
She wondered for a moment if she’d ever see them again. If she would ever kiss Randy’s damp, bald head, or hug Rebecca close. Realistically, she knew she wouldn’t. Thousands of miles and an endless roaming graveyard now separated them from one another.
Still, there was that hope, deep in her heart, that they would meet again. She held onto it and smiled, because even in the face of what’d happened, she found she could still hold onto hope. It was a small thing she knew, but in the world of the hungry dead, even small things counted a great deal.
"Let's move. Winter's coming and I don't plan to spend it cold," she called as she slid into the driver's seat.
Come what may, they would survive, and live. No matter what, they would stick together. Nothing had changed, not really, if she looked at it that way. There would be a tomorrow, all she had to do was put one foot in front of the other and keep moving.
It was a day like any other.
Acknowledgments
Lotta people I gotta thank for this book you are looking at right now.
Michelle Fairbanks of Fresh Design Books for that amazing cover art. Seriously, she is gifted and wonderful.
Cody Burgos for the Dire Bunny logo and the duality rabbits that separated the scenes. Look for more from this guy in the future. He's going places.
Joe Hagen, fellow author and amazing friend for helping me get this thing into Kindle format, a process I do not understand. Go check out his Moonrise series. It's rare to see somebody do something new with werewolves.
Wendy Garfinkle, editor and dear friend, for just being an amazing person all around. She has no idea how much she helps me be a better writer.
And you, Nate. Yeah, you. Ya Kiwi asshole. I love you. You are my brother, and you will never know how much I really lean on your shoulder. Thank you for being part of my world. It's a better place for you being in it.
