him to stumble.

Much to my surprise, he falls down with a loud thud. Holy shit. I can’t believe I’m able to stand my own ground in this fight. I wish Charlie could have seen that.

Speaking of Charlie, I look around to see if he’s close. As soon as I turn my head to the left, the demon who I just took down somehow charges me, and I fall to the ground. I’m still tender from the blast earlier, so the pain is almost blinding, but I grind my teeth and bear it. I roll over and my heart stops in my chest. Christina’s parents are helping the reapers finish off some of the prisoners that were found in the debris and the demon that just left me is now heading straight toward them.

Their backs are turned as they’re reaping prisoners. They have no clue this guard is running towards them and I can’t reach them in time. What the hell am I going to do? I can’t watch my best friend’s parents dies.

A familiar face runs out of the swarm of people and cuts of the guard before it gets to Frank and Janice. Charlie begins fighting the guard and gets the upper hand.

Oh, thank God. One less thing to worry about. Speaking of Christina, where the hell is she? I turn around and find her heading right toward me. However, the demon that revealed us earlier is hot on her trail. His black inky shadows engulfing her. Why the hell is he following her?

I take off back the way I came, toward her.

As I approach her, she’s passing by one of the reapers. He bends down, taking one of the souls from the prisoners. The prisoner jerks, fighting. He’s hanging on, not wanting to give up.

The teachers told us stories about this, but it’s another thing to witness it.

However, the reaper just focuses on his job and keeps pulling at the soul.

When Christina walks past the reaper to get to me, the demon shoves the reaper’s outlaid hands off the prisoner.

What the hell is he doing? That’s not supposed to happen. His power is still churning. “Christina…”

Her eyebrows furrow at my tone and turns to look at what’s going on beside her, but it’s too late.

The demon pushes the reaper’s outlaid hands toward Christina.

No, the demon can’t do that to her. I rush toward her and throw myself between her and the reaper’s hands.

The reaper’s hands touch me, and I can feel his power connect with me. His magic tugs at my soul, but that can’t be. The council said we didn’t have one. However, mine gets tugged out and as I look around one last time, the demon is there with his dark black hair, piercing blue eyes, and a smirk.

Inky black swirls around him and he holds out a box. “Don’t worry, I’ll keep you safe.” His smirk grows into a wide, terrifying grin. “Kind of.”

Then my soul is suddenly being tugged towards him and not the reaper.

Dear God. Please someone help me.
