“Don’t do it.” Drew said aiming his pistol at the back of the cops head through the open window. Glancing back and forth the cop saw it was a lost cause and set his gun down on the ground.
“Now what?” Yue asked after they’d handcuffed the cop and put him in the back of his own squad car. They’d already taken the opportunity to snag every bit of gear they could get out of the car. The trunk of the police car had been like a survivalists treasure chest. Drew reached in the car and yanked all the cables out of the radio. They’d already taken the cops phone when they locked him in the back of his car with just a pair of boxers and socks on.
“Let’s leave the cruiser on the side of the road and send the cop packing. It won’t hurt to have a spare car sitting out here in case we need it.” Drew said. They didn’t want to kill the cop. He hadn’t tried to kill them. He’d been about to rip them off but that was different. Neither of them wanted to execute the cop in cold blood. Other than a few odd looks from a minivan that drove by there was no immediate consequence to sending the mostly naked officer jogging up the road with his arms cuffed in front of him. Neither of them noticed the cuffed man stopping briefly to memorize the license plate on Drew’s truck.
Leaving the police cruiser locked up on the grassy median they drove the U-Haul into their subdivision. This time Drew was confident they had everyone’s attention. Mothers and fathers of children who were going to starve to death in the very near future would be super curious what was in the back of their truck. If they deduced the U-Haul was full of food, medical supplies and assorted other goodies then there was no doubt the neighbors would turn into a pitchfork and torches mob. The sooner they got this truck unloaded and out of sight the better.
They drove over to their house and parked in the front. Drew saw more than one set of curtains shifting around. A couple of people went so far as to walk out on their patios to try and see what kind of goods they had in the back. Seeing the blood stains and the weapons no one quite had the guts to ask them what was in the truck.
“This is a really bad idea.” Yue said looking around.
“You guys were supposed to run out and get some Amoxicillin or something. Not steal an entire drug store and lead a parade of desperation back to our house. WTF?” LeBron said as he walked out of the garage staring at the big ass U-Haul parked in the alley. His neck whipping back and forth as he took in all the observers. The alley had looked pretty much deserted until his brother and sister had shown up with what amounted to a giant picnic basket.
“Let’s get it unloaded.” Drew said.
“The sooner the supplies are inside and secure the sooner we can all get ready for people to start beating on our door trying to take them.” LeBron said.
“Yeah probably big guys with big guns.” Drew commented as he walked towards the truck to open it up.
“It’s not guys with guns I’m worried about.” Yue said seriously enough that both LeBron and Drew focused on her words. “It’s the guys with little starving kids who are going to be the death of us.”
Completely bummed out by the truth of what Yue had just said they began unloading the back of the U-Haul as fast as they could. Not trusting the garage to secure their goods they carried everything into the house and stacked it in the living room. Anything that looked like it might help their dad they sat in a separate pile on the kitchen counter. That pile was pretty big by the time they were halfway done unloading.
Nancy woke up while they were carrying stuff in and had to be told what’d happened. She hugged each of them tight and got to work sorting out the supplies they were carrying in. She cried softly to herself when she saw the gigantic stack of different kinds of pain pills and antibiotics. She didn’t know what she’d done to deserve such wonderful kids but somehow the universe had come through for her. Despite not being able to have more of their own they’d still ended up with the large loving family she’d always wanted.
It seemed to take forever but eventually they finished unloading the truck. They wanted to pass out on the couch more than anything but there was still work that needed to be done. If nothing else, they had to ditch the U-Haul as soon as possible. Just in case everyone in the city hadn’t already seen it parked in front of their house. Drew dragged his aching body out to the truck and drove it out of the neighborhood with LeBron following him.
The ditched it in the large overflow parking lot of a church that was right up the road from them. They left it parked right where a carnival normally setup every year. Drew jumped in the truck with LeBron and they drove back home. They parked the truck in the garage and made sure it was all locked up then went back in the house. Nancy was
