“Go!” Bart yelled from the backseat as he started blasting away through one of the unbroken back windows. Drew put his foot down hard while simultaneously pulling up his pistol and snapping off some unaimed shots. The shots had the desired effect of sending the people standing around that side of the car leaping for cover. Yue was curled up on the floor since the woman on her side of the car had started shooting as soon as Bart had. The bullets hammered into the side of the Expedition and easily pierced the stop sign strapped over the window. LeBron had ducked down low. He was holding his pistol up in his good hand sending random shots out through his window. If they survived this encounter, they were going to be needing a lot more duct tape. LeBron really hoped no one shot him in his good hand.
A few shots pinged off the signs covering the back window. A couple of the shots made new holes in the signs and bounced around inside the Expedition. Drew was driving like a mad man trying to evade the bullets he imagined were aimed at their tires and the back of his head. Bart was yelling for everyone to sound off if they were ok or not. He relaxed once everyone checked in and the bullets stopped hitting the back of the truck.
“Why’d you yell to go!” Drew yelled over his shoulder. He was freaked out. There was enough adrenaline pumping through him that he felt like he could’ve masqueraded as a surger.
“I didn’t really want to be executed on the side of the road while they took our ride. You want your dead body lying next to those two dead monster truck guys for eternity? It wouldn’t surprise me if that ditch on the other side of the road wasn’t full of dead bodies and stripped-down cars.” Bart said in a calm voice before lying back down and promptly passing out.
“Can’t really argue with that.” LeBron said to Drew who was still fuming. Drew’s heart was beating like crazy. He was in shock they were even alive. He was also soaking wet from the rain pouring in through his window. He wondered if they should even bother looking for a new vehicle. At this point it was pretty obvious they’d just shoot the windows out the first chance they got anyway.
Drew kept checking the side mirrors to make sure they weren’t being chased. He was so busy looking at the side mirrors he almost missed the gang of surgers rushing at them from the median. Yue yelling in his ear to look to his left Drew yanked the steering wheel to the right avoiding the first surger jumping for them. That turn wasn’t enough to keep them from smacking head on into another two. One of whom smashed right through the duct taped grocery bag windshield onto Drew. Screaming Drew slammed on the brakes sending the truck into a vicious skid.
“He’s dead! Keep going!” Yue screamed into Drews face. Drew looked down and saw that Yue had picked up the adolescent surger by the shoulders. The things spine was literally sticking out of a big hole ripped in the top of its back. Blood was everywhere. The kids eyes were still wide open.
A much larger surger stuck it’s head through the open driver’s side window and began scrambling in on top of Drew. Drew whipped off his seatbelt and fell over backwards into the passenger seat trying to get away. He started kicking his attacker in the face. The truck was slowly accelerating with no one at the steering wheel except the upside-down dead kid. Yue shot the big surger in the head as another one started pounding on the stop sign next to her. She ignored that one to spin around and shoot the one trying to get in the truck through her dad’s window.
“Drive!” Yue screamed again. LeBron had curled into a ball against his seat pointing his rifle out his open window and shaking like a leaf. Drew was screaming and kicking the dead guy in the face while the Expedition rolled down the interstate with no one steering it. Yue opened her door to hop out and try to pull the dead guy out the window so Drew could get back in the seat. Her door was slammed back in her face by another surger who’d been running at the truck. It caught the corner of her suddenly opening door right in the head and went down. Yue put a couple of rounds into its body to make sure it stayed down then tried hopping out again. She kept yelling for Drew to get his ass back in the driver’s seat.
Jogging to get to the front door she grabbed the oversized surger by the legs and pulled hard. The mostly headless dead guy came out of the window on top of Yue like a giant load of bloody afterbirth. The safety glass still clinging to the window frame raining down all over her. Pulling that guy out shifted around the kid who tumbled down to the floorboards landing on the accelerator. Yue watched in frustration as the truck took off without her. She sighed and started running along behind it hoping Drew would pull his head out of his butt and get the truck stopped for her. More than likely Bart had slept through the whole ordeal.
In the Expedition Drew struggled to pull the dead kid off the ground and regain control of the truck. The kids spinal cord got stuck on the steering wheel and Drew had to basically rip him out of there. He opened the door and shoved the kid back down after he maneuvered around so that his foot was the one controlling the accelerator. He stopped the truck once he was
