dark house pausing to poke his head into each room.  He didn’t see anything after doing a full circuit of the second-floor room so headed downstairs.  The downstairs took less time to check.  He opened the front door so LeBron could join him in checking the garage to finish off the sweep.  The garage doors had light filtering in from the outside.  The dusty light illuminated a couple of motorcycles and what turned out to be a tarp covered bright yellow Hummer with gigantic tires.

“Well that’ll take very last bit of gas we’ve got.”  LeBron said checking out the banana colored behemoth.

“Yeah.  To get to the end of the driveway.  But at least we’d be inconspicuous driving it around.  These may work better.”  Drew said walking over to get a better look at the beefed-up looking dirt bikes.

“Let’s look later man. Yue’s going to have a heart attack if we don’t get dad tucked into a real bed real soon.”  LeBron said spinning on his heel to head out of the garage.  At the mention of Yue and their dad Drew followed quickly behind.

Walking out the front door Drew shot Yue a thumbs up gesture to let her know the house looked empty and that they should be good to go.  He hurried down the stairs to help Yue and LeBron carry in their dad.  They carefully pulled Bart out of the backseat.  Bart moaned a few times when he was being pulled out but didn’t wake up.  LeBron moved forward to help Drew carry their dad, but Drew waved him off.  The man had gotten so light that he could easily carry him cradled like a child in his arms.  Shocked by how frail and light their dad had become Drew was suddenly struck by that same intense fear he saw on Yue’s face.

LeBron held the door open as Drew carried Bart up the stairs into the house.  Yue grabbed some of their gear out of the battered Expedition and followed them inside.  She pushed the downstairs door closed and followed Drew through the house to the master bedroom.  Despite her fear for their dad she was still impressed by the beauty of the décor in the huge master bedroom.  That only distracted her for a split second before she rushed forward to help Drew and LeBron get Bart comfortable on the massive white comforted bed pushed against the wall.

“Now what can we do?”  LeBron asked Yue once they had Bart cleaned up and tucked in.  LeBron’s voice quivered with the same powerful mix of emotions they were all feeling.

“We let him rest.  What was that?”  Yue asked looking around.  They’d all heard the distant noises coming from outside.  Sound carried pretty well in a world devoid of mankind’s noise making contraptions.  Leaving Yue to watch over Bart, LeBron and Drew left to see where the noise was coming from.

“It’s coming from the front of the house.”  Drew said slipping his rifle strap down so he could easily get to it.  He waited for LeBron to adjust his as well.  Once LeBron was ready, they crept through the house to the front door as silently as they could.  Not that it should make a difference with all the racket they were hearing from outside.  It sounded like somebody was beating the holy hell out of the Expedition they’d left parked out front.  Either that or a sledgehammer was mating with a bunch of oversized cymbals.

Drew motioned for LeBron to stay still while he snuck over to the window to see what was going on outside.  A lone surger was systematically ripping their ride apart.  Drew stared out the window watching while the tall freak ripped the signs off the truck. Once it had the signs ripped off it dove inside through a window.  It beat the tie wrap secured signs off the back window and then just lay in the back kicking the roof repetitively for whatever reason.  Finally, it smashed its way out through the back and wandered in a complete circle around the Expedition.

Drew was on the verge of backing off when the surger spun in a tight circle for no apparent reason and stared right at him.  Drew held that eye contact for a split second too long before backing rapidly away from the window trying to piece together what’d just happened.  He’d only taken maybe three steps when the front door reverberated loudly from being struck hard from the outside.  Drew and LeBron quickly aimed their weapons at the door waiting to see what would happen.

The door shook hard one more time then suddenly flew off its hinges as the berserk surger rampaged into the room.  LeBron and Drew both opened fire blowing holes in the wall, floor, and door.  They pretty much hit everything except for the freak charging straight at them with its mouth wide open.  The surger sprang through the air for Drew who kept pulling the trigger on his AR-15 as quickly as he could.  LeBron was struggling to bring his weapon to bear thanks to his finger splint getting in the way.

A few of Drews bullets found their mark right as the surger slammed into him.  Drew and the rapidly dying surger rolled on the ground in a growing pool of the surger’s life blood.  He gripped the surger around the neck as it continued to try and bite him. Eventually it grew too weak to keep trying to bite him.  Looking up Drew saw his brother standing next to him with the barrel of his rifle pointing at the surger’s head.

“You ok?  He didn’t bite you right?  I didn’t want to shoot him and hit you in the hand if he was dying anyway.”  LeBron rapid fired the questions at Drew while looking extremely upset.

“All good.  Just need some wet wipes and a gallon of bleach.”  Drew said pushing the body of
