“A little light reading?” She’d asked him. LeBron had been startled at being addressed. He’d been completely engulfed in the textbook in front of him. He smiled and nodded at her offering her the plate of Vienna sausages. She declined those morsels but did take a big swig of his ice water. The doctor, a veterinarian, who was treating him saw Yue standing there and had come over to tell her what was going on. They had no X-Ray machines but best guess he had a fractured jaw. Probably just a hairline fracture. The plan was to keep him immobile until it healed. Until then he wasn’t supposed to talk or move his mouth very much at all.
“So, LeBron’s doing good.” Yue said. Even in his ticked off mood Drew recognized something odd about the way Yue was acting.
“What else is going on?” He asked. He’d noticed everyone was starting to wander back towards the trailers. Between the gunshots and the talking outside everyone was pretty surprised no more surgers had already shown up. No one wanted to be caught outside when it got dark enough for the crawlerz to emerge.
“Blaze asked me to eat dinner with him.” Yue said so fast that Drew almost missed it.
“You said no right?” Drew stopped walking to stare at her.
“I said yes. He kind of holds our lives in his palm right now. I have to go back to his truck for the night to meet up with him. I’ll see you tomorrow though.” Yue was backing away from the anger smoldering in her brothers eyes.
“You mean his ‘vardo’ don’t you? The guys like twenty years older than you.” Drew hissed. Yue pulled away.
“Don’t worry. I’m a big girl. It’s just dinner anyway. Honestly with a name like Blaze I would’ve thought he’d have invited you to dinner instead of me.” Yue walked towards the trailer she’d be spending the night in while a super sulky Drew walked towards his. A scream from the other side of the trailers captured both their attention.
Drew ran around the truck in time to see a naked obese man sink his teeth into the flesh on the back of the bald woman they’d talked to earlier that day. The other half of the couple was lying on the ground a few feet away with his throat and half of the skin on his face ripped off. The obese man’s face snapped up when Drew yelled to get his attention. The woman squirmed out from under the greasy mound of fat rolls and curly black hair. She disappeared underneath the truck. Drew put three rounds into the fat surger before it could even get close to him.
Drew nodded at Yue who’d come around from the other side of the truck to help. She took in the situation and nodded back then left for her date. They were both moving extra fast and being extra quiet since there were obviously now surgers in the area. Charani was at the door with Harley waiting for everyone to get back in so they could close up for the night. She asked about the hairless couple since they were the only others not accounted for. Drew shook his head to indicate the couple hadn’t made it.
The bald woman walked around the opposite side of the truck and stared at Drew. She was in the early stages of the transition. Drew had seen this stage plenty of times in the videos LeBron had shown him. It wouldn’t be long now before she went from looking roofied to trying to rip his head off. He raised the barrel of his rifle slightly. The woman’s eyes narrowed, and she leapt at him with a low growl. He fired his rifle at the same time Harley gave her both of his barrels. One of the slugs from Harley caught her in the middle of her head.
Drew scrambled up into the back of the trailer. Charani took one last sad look down at the body of the bald woman before helping Harley shut and lock the back doors. She didn’t ask Drew where Yue was. Drew took that to mean that the whole truck knew his sister was on a date with the boss. That wasn’t gross at all.
Drew stormed to the back of the truck and found a place to sleep as far from the cat piss smelling crate as possible. As worked up as he was, he doubted he’d even be able to fall asleep. The stress warred with his exhaustion and the exhaustion eventually won.
Chapter 35: The Man in the Suit
“Wake up.”
Drew shifted away from the prodding boot and overly loud voice. He kept his eyes tightly shut and willed whoever it was to go away so he could sleep another five minutes. Whoever it was didn’t respond to Drews subconscious snooze button request.
“Seriously wake up.” The next time was followed by a more substantial boot to his ribs. Drew looked up to see Harley towering over him with an amused look on his face. Drew sat up making a big show of rubbing his side.
“Good morning to you too. What’s up?” Drew was mostly interested in hitting the pee hole then trying to figure out where the coffee smell
