“Nicoli will kill you for crossing him.” I say in hopes to talk some sense into him. He merely shrugs at my statement, already having known and accepted such fate. Chills run down my spine as I see just how far he is willing to go to see justice through.
“I always knew he was possessive of you but all men are in our world, but the more I watched the more I realized it was more than that. This man loves you. Actually fucking loves you." He gives a crazed laugh at the realization. My eyes begin to water at his words.
What have I done?
A wide grin pulls on his lips at seeing my tears. "So you see, I have to kill you, taking you from him would destroy him entirely. Men like him don’t but rarely find love. He will never get past this.” He is interrupted as his phone rings in his pocket. Pulling it out he turns around, his back to me as he answers it. Now knowing the truth my head grasps to catch up with everything.
Nico didn't cheat on me... Relief rushes through my body just before sorrow as I realize that I won't be able to tell Nico that I am sorry and I love him. Why did I doubt him? I berated myself.
Suddenly Dario turns back to face me as he lowers the phone. "Seems your doting husband is a little more resourceful than I give him credit for. One of my men saw him pull up a moment ago. I'm sure he will be here any minute." He says gleefully.
Nico is here? Hope sparks to life inside of me just before it falls short as I see him pulling out a gun and pointing it in my direction. I stop breathing as I stare at the end of the barrel pointed directly between my eyes. My pulse races as my heart thumps loud enough for me to audibly hear in the silence as no one moves.
“Dario!” Nicoli’s voice roars out of the shadows as he steps out into view. I dare a look at him, desperate to see his face knowing it might be the last time I do. His face is hard and dangerous as he keeps his eyes trained on Dario and his gun still pointed in my direction. A gun in Nico’s hand aimed at Dario. I look back around as I see two other men with guns, both aimed at Nico. My heart drops at the sight.
No.
“Nicoli, so glad you could join in the fun. I was just having a lovely discussion with your beautiful wife.” He turns to look at Nico as he takes a step towards me. Nicoli steps forward at his advance to me. “Ahh ahh ahh, now I would be very careful of your next moves Nicoli. I would hate to have to pull the trigger early and ruin all of our fun.” Nico stills finally looking at me. His eyes are deep with fear. Something I didn’t know he was capable of feeling. He turns his attention back on Dario, hardening his gaze, watching him with piercing eyes as he comes to stand beside me. He switches back to his joyous tone, cementing just how insane he has become. “So I took a shot in the dark with this but after watching you for so long I am willing to bet my other hand that you love her. Don’t you?”
Nico doesn’t respond, nor does he move except for his eyes as they flicker over to me briefly. “Wonderful.” Dario says, noting the short exchange. Taking his arm he brushes the hair away from my neck exposing my skin. Leaning down close enough to feel the heat of his breath as it causes bumps to rise on my flesh, he whispers to me. “See didn’t I tell you, he loves you.” With the gun positioned now to my temple I look directly at Nico.
“Dario, why don’t you leave Liliana out of this and settle your issues with me. Your problems are with me not her.”
I feel him tense as he pushes the gun harder against me. “You took my wife from me! So I will take yours from you.” He bellows out unable to control his emotions. I hear the defining click as his thumb pulls down on the hammer of his gun. I close my eyes unable to watch Nico’s expression as he watches.
Everything after happens in a rush as I hear a loud whoosh of water behind me just before a scrape of the metal chair leg on the concrete below. I am yanked back, chair and all off the ledge of the dock just as the thunderous crack of
