His words shake me to the core, cutting me deep. I never want him to ever feel like I don’t appreciate him because I do. I’m forever grateful he spared my life. But I’ve seen the dark side of him, and I know what he’s capable of. I always known what he’s capable of by what Papa used to say but seeing it for myself is another thing. It’s like hearing about Michael Myer then you come face to face with him. I only saw the tip of the ice of how cruel Devious can be.
He glares down at his expensive watch.
“Let’s go so we won’t miss our flight to Delos. This conversation is over.”
We drive to the private plane in silence but there is tension, lots of it. I haven’t thought about the stuff he was doing for me was his way of trying to make amends. We board the plane, and he sits across from me. He glances out the window, but his shoulders are stiff as a board.
Guilt coils in my stomach like a snake. “You’re wrong, Devious. I do appreciate what you do, and I do want you.”
Pain burns my chest as he wouldn’t glance at me and I place my palm on his warm hand, but he tries to move his hand, but I hold on tighter.
“I won’t hurt you.” Disgust lies in my belly as I lie to his face. This is so wrong on so many levels. I shouldn’t feel this way, but here I am, lying to earn his trust so I can do the very thing I say I wouldn’t do. Who am I? I don’t even know who I am anymore. Devious doesn’t say anything, but his eyes snap onto mine.
“I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings, Roselyn. But you can’t expect me to believe you won’t betray me again. You keep asking me for a phone, last time you had one, you betrayed me.” He pauses. “Haven’t you ever thought, the reason why I didn’t kill you because I want you. I told you I wanted you.”
I don’t respond. The pilot announces for us to have on our seatbelt before we land.
“You’re not going to shove me back in the cell when we get back to the manor, are you?”
He lifts his bushy eyebrow and shakes his head. “No, I’m a man of my word. We are going to argue, couples do it all the time, but if I have to shove you in the dungeon, then I’m going to snap your neck. I’m not going to keep going through this bullshit with you. You are always trying to betray me every chance you get.”
“So, we’re a couple now?”
“No. We won’t be until I can fully trust you and see you as an equal.”
The plane lands, the trip to Delos was shorter than I thought.
Devious’s words are still in the back of my mind and the stupid guilt keep rising in my chest. Every time I stare at him, I feel guilty. Just fucking great. Devious holds my hand as we step off the plane. An Uber pulls up to the private airport and Devious opens my door for me.
“So, what are we?” I ask, curious.
“You’re still my pet, Nymph.”
I slide in and Devious says something to the driver in Greek as he straps my seatbelt over my shoulders. The drive is short and we stop at a port.
“I thought we were in Delos.”
He shakes his head. “We have to take a boat to get there.”
So, we get inside of a boat, then we stop at a port. The air smells salty from the sea and the wind blows. When we get out of the boat, Devious throws some money at the captain. I glance around, and Delos island is pretty but looks like a desert. Devious shows me around, we go to the Temple of Hercules. It is a place with a bunch of rocks and half-built buildings. Devious takes pictures of me on his phone as we continue to sightsee.
We stand in front of the two statues of two beheaded people, then we move on to other sites. Devious gives me a background on the island. Apparently, Apollo and Artemis were born on this island. They are like twins or some shit.
“I figured you love Greek Mythology, but I didn’t know you were a fanatic.”
He flashes me a smile. “Like you’re a fanatic with Tokyo Ghoul.”
“Am not.”
“When the maid unpacked your shit, there was so much clothing with it on it. And you drew a spider lily in your cell.”
“What do you know about the flower?”
“I’ve done my research. It grows in hell to guide people to their love ones in the afterlife.” He thrust his fingers through his hair. “I had to make sure you weren’t putting a voodoo shit on me.”
I laugh lightly. “I prefer to put a knife through your back.”
“That’s not funny, Roselyn.” He shoots me a glare. “Consider this your first traveling trip,” he pauses. “You said you want to travel the world so if you behave then I’ll take you anywhere you want.”
“Okay.” I nod, smiling.
“You’re hungry?”
“Yeah.”
“I rented out a boat so we can have dinner on the sea.”
I nod. Guilt eats at me with every fiber because Devious is trying his best to be good to me. I’m going to hell when I betray him.
Devious
“CLOSE YOUR EYES,” I TELL Roselyn as we step onto the boat. She gives me a serious look, arching her eyebrow.
“I’m serious, Roselyn. Do you trust me?”
“I trust you to protect me, but I don’t trust you to not kill me.”
I shake my head, rolling my eyes. “Do what I say.”
She does what I say, then I have her step on the boat as
