I threw my phone so hard against the wall, it shattered into small pieces. I never asked for help. Ever. Both of them had come to me in the past. I had cleaned up messes for them, without complaint, and he wanted to give me hell?
The gravel in the driveway let me know he was coming. Placing the infant on her breast so it could feed, I let him in. He looked at me, his lips thin when he saw her shackled at the ankle, and the leeway she had to roam the house.
He was smart enough to not say a word until he examined her. I waited outside, knowing I would not be able to control whatever this thing was inside of me if she died.
The screen door banged as he walked out.
“Congratulations, you’re a father.” He said drily.
Swinging my head around, I glared at him, “No shit. I knew that before you came. Did you save her?”
“There was another baby inside of her. You have twins, Havoc. He is a puny little thing, but I’m guessing if your blood is coursing through him, he will be ok.” He shrugged.
I was dumbstruck. I never imagined twins. Wait, he still didn’t mention her.
“Marseille?”
He scrutinized me. His eyebrow arching up, looking me up and down, then he walked all around me, looking at my body, checking me out visually.
“Alright asshole, is she going to live or not?” I was getting pissed.
“Yes, if that’s what you want. I’m just trying to figure out where the real Havoc went. The one I grew up with. The hardcore man who didn’t give a shit about anyone but himself.”
“Fuck you.” I was just relieved she was going to be alright. I walked towards the door.
“No thanks, it looks like you have the fucking department covered,” he said shaking his head, not so much in disgust but almost in disappointment, like I had let him down.
I walked in to see Marseille with more color in her face, exhausted, with a baby on each breast. I would never tell her, or admit it to anyone else, but it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.
I heard my name, as soon I turned around, Chase was throwing me a new sat phone. “We are even now,” he said tersely, “and don’t forget fucking protocol again.” Slamming my door was his dramatic exit to let me know he was pissed and I would eventually pay for it.
“Protocol?” Marseille asked softly.
“Don’t worry about it. Just feed my sons.” I warned.
“Can we at least name them?” She cast her eyes down, holding them gently.
“I already consented to Edgar, after your favorite author.” I needed to get out of the room. It was getting suffocating.
She started to say something, but the look on my face stopped her. I sighed. “Chaos. Call him Chaos. After all, that was what he caused coming into this world.” I saw the small smile play at her lips as I walked out of the cabin.
Marseille
Looking down at my two little men lying in each arm, I was struck with such wonder. Chaos was sucking with such vigor in my breast, I couldn’t stop the small chuckle that erupted from me. No matter how much he was traumatized during birth, he seemed to be a little fighter. Just like his daddy. That thought immediately made me wince.
For the love of all that is holy, please let my boys grow up with a soul. I realized that I was wrong, it was more important than ever to break free from Havoc. I could subject them to the horror of this life.
Havoc
I needed to let some steam out or I was going to explode. My life was slowly turning into something I couldn’t control.
Twins? Two sons? This was a blessing and a curse. I needed her help now. Wanting her was one thing – needing her was entirely another.
Walking back inside, I saw the fierce look of a momma bear. No matter how much I felt for her, my sons and their upbringing would always come first.
Epilogue
Havoc
The twins just celebrated their ten-year-old birthday. They are more active than I would’ve guessed.
I will be taking them on their first hunt. I never expected them to pick Marseille as their prey, but I can’t say I blame them. She shows them no respect or love anymore.
It is like she is offended that they have free run and she is chained up. She knew her situation when she came, she had a choice. She chose to stay.
When I unlocked her shackles and she stood at the door, I saw a glimmer of the woman I first brought here.
“Run!” The two boys said in unison.
She had a defeated look on her face, knowing this was our end, as she took off out into the woods. I wanted to tell her to come back.
Before I could stop them, the kill shot had been made.
The End
Or Wait – No, it’s Not
This Was the Beginning
