"Someone must have found a guard that was easier to bribe," suggested Flavio, turning on his tablet to search for more news on the matter.
"I highly doubt that. I bet that the FBI have already started an investigation way before they announced the murder to the news. Notice that they already mentioned the toxicology report which isn’t ready within an hour of the crime. It takes more time. Since there was already an issued report, it must have happened earlier. So, the feds had most likely checked the guards on duty by that time already," Noah said, dialing Isaac’s phone number.
He gave him the task of pulling out the autopsy report on Selvaggio’s death to see the time of death and any other suspicious facts. As a mafia boss, he might be able to spot more things out of the ordinary.
Within a couple of minutes, Isaac sent the files, saying that he would be there with Drew soon.
The autopsy was confusing and nothing really made sense. The time of death had been set at one in the morning, yet the toxicology report had been recorded merely half an hour later, which was just as impossible as breaking into a high-security prison. Not to mention that the cause of death was not a slashed throat as they had said in the news, but rather blood loss from a shot.
Flavio cleared this throat. "If you ask me, he got exactly what he deserved. I don’t even care how he died. I’m just happy that he is gone."
"Lynette will be crushed when she hears about it." Inéz worried.
"She won’t. Her father fucked up big time with her," Noah pointed out, chuckling. "Lynette was dragged into this mess because of his decisions. She might be sad because he was her father, but I doubt even she could say that he deserved to live."
The elevator’s ring echoed in the penthouse, indicating that someone wanted to come up.
"It must be Nicodemo. He has returned from Seattle," said the Capo, accepting the request.
Soon all three of Noah’s soldiers were together, coming up with plausible scenarios about Severo’s death. And also figuring out what to do about Lynette. She was still missing, no sign of her in the Bratva hideout. Not to mention that two captains had been killed because of Noah’s search for her. And he didn’t want to stop.
"For fuck’s sake, I don’t even care why you need her. Nothing can be so important that it is worth losing your people," Flavio grunted, angry that his Capowasn’t listening to him at all. He had every right to talk him out of any further search. And as his Underboss, and more importantly his brother, he should have got through to him already.
Out of a sudden, a loud female laugh rang around the penthouse. All men drew their weapons instinctively, searching the place carefully. There was a grunt coming from upstairs and a slight movement followed by the clicks of heels. Their eyes darted there, a stunned silence surrounding them. On the top of the stairs, there was a woman.
Noah cursed inwardly, moving to stand, but then sank back down. He was lower than the woman, butsittingwasapowerfulpositionaslongashewasrelaxedenough. Instead,he extended his hand open-palmed and invited her closer, but she immediately stopped with no intention of letting him call the shots. In her black skinny jeans and dark green shirt, standing with her arms in the air in a gesture of surrender, she still seethed with confidence and power. She looked anything but ready to give up judging by the smirk painted across her face. Amusement flashed in her eyes, clearly finding this situation funny. She reached for her hair which was in a ponytail and let it loose. Seeing her beautiful, long, dark auburn hair, there was no doubt as to who she was exactly.
Lynette Selvaggio was standing there in the flesh, in front of all the people who had been looking for her. For them, it was a long-awaited meeting. But it was far from expected, nevertheless.
Noah rolled his eyes at the wink she gave him. He motioned for his people to lower their weapons. Even though he didn’t recognize the girl’s offbeat behavior, she was not a threat. He finally stood up.
She seemed very different from the last time they had met but Noah couldn’t put his finger on what that actually was. Of course, he could see the confidence written all over her and had no doubt as to why she was there, but that wasn’t it. That wasn’t all there was. Satisfaction grew in him, knowing that he was close to achieving exactly what he’d wanted. No matter why the girl came to him when he had been so certain that she was in the Bratva’s hands. Clearly, he had been mistaken.
She slowly walked down the stairs, looking straight into the older Falcone’s eyes and her expression changed slightly revealing some masked irritation. He could recognize it easily since it was her usual reaction. However, she hadn’t acted on it that much in his presence before. He wondered whether that had changed and why.
"For once, Noah, you should actually listen to your brother. After all, he is the genius," she said, her Sicilian accent coming out strongly.
Lynette stepped closer to theCapowithout any fear whatsoever - the other difference in her behavior.
Noah smiled. "We have been looking for you," he admitted.
Lynette shrugged looking even more annoyed. "Believe me, I know," she answered but her eyes were on the Underboss. "Go on, Flavio. You don’t have to hide your suspicions anymore. I am here, aren’t I?"
A younger Falcone curved his lips in displeasure, clearly knowing exactly what she meant. "The fuck you’re talking about, Lynette?" Noah growled. She ignored him again.
"Flavio,
