“Look at his legs, he isn’t using them to change gears. This bike has been customized so you can use your hands for everything. The brake, changing gears, it’s something called a flatshifter. I know it’s not the same as your old bike but I thought until your feet get on the same page as you, maybe you could still ride if you wanted.”
He didn’t say a word, just pulled me down on his lap and kissed me hard.
“Woman, you are too good to me.”
“You like it?”
“Are you fucking kidding! I love it! Clean get the fuck off my bike!”
Clean stopped in front of him and began telling him about the mechanism and how he would need to use it to drive. We got Ryder settled on the bike and after trying a few times, he was a pro. The bike even had an automatic stand so when it stopped moving it didn’t just fall over, the kickstand would pop out and keep him upright until he was able to get down.
He rode around for a few minutes the smile on his face permanently imprinted in my mind.
“Babygirl, get your ass over here.”
I ran over to him as he stopped to wait for me, he moved forward on the bike and I hopped on behind him.
“You want to go for a ride, my love?”
“I thought you’d never ask.”
He kissed me, and then we took off, my hair blowing in the wind and my husband having the time of his life. Finally, back on the road.
