I once again got in the back with Will andAdam started to drive away, I handed Amelia her bag.
“Thank you,there’s not much in it, save for a few clothes but it is mine” she hugged thebag to her chest.
“You’rewelcome”
We saw afew more zombies coming our way, the gunshots must have attracted them.
Then it hitme, what I had just done. I had taken another man’s life. Even though he wasthe worst of mankind, I had taken his life. My smile faded, my hands started toshake badly and I could not get control of them. “Oh my God I just killedsomeone, I can't believe it, I'm a murderer. What's Deacon going to do with meknowing what I did to one of his men?” My eyes filled with tears, I looked tothe others for forgiveness and saw pity from Will.
“Look,George you did what you had to do to save me, the man was a menace. Deacon willunderstand.” He touched his hand to his neck and winced at the soreness.
I looked atthe ugly red and purple marks on his neck and I knew he was right, well aboutTony being a menace anyway. I still didn't know how Deacon was going to takethe news. I started to calm down, my hands now only had minor shakes.
“Now whatdo we do with Amelia?” I asked.
“What doyou mean, what are you going to do with me? You saved me, you have to take mewith you.” Amelia shrieked.
I think shewas terrified to be left alone.
“I don'tthink it is the best place for you Hun, the guys there are not too good withthe ladies. In truth most of them are like Tony, the guy that attacked you,”Will said. “The three of us are the exception at the warehouse,” he explained.
“I have anidea,” I said, nervous now that I had said it. What if I could not trust thesetwo guys? But then they seemed good so far. Will cares for Nia and saved Ameliafrom Tony and Adam just agreed she could not go back with them.
“Would youlike to leave Deacon, Adam?” I asked, hoping that I was not overstepping somesort of loyalty line.
“Yeah butit's hard, the last guy that tried to leave was hunted down, tied to the backof a car and dragged home, there was nothing left of him by the time they gotback, just a bloody rope,” he replied somberly.
“Adam is inon our escape plan George. So you’re safe with him. What are you thinking of?”Will asked.
“Slow upjust here Adam,” I said. We pulled up outside the fire station in the previoustown of Aldham. We hadn't seen any zombies yet so I was hopeful that thiswould be a good place to set up camp. I thought back to earlier when I saw thebride and her guests and wondered where they had gone.
“What ifAdam stays with Amelia? We can tell Deacon that Tony was attacked by zombies,Adam went to save him but we couldn't save them as we were swarmed too.Meanwhile Adam and Amelia here could hide out in the fire station. I have someenergy bars and milkshakes that they can have until we can escape with everyoneelse and come back here. The fire station should have beds and blankets forthose who used to be on call. What do you guys think?” I laid out the basics ofmy plan.
“I don'tknow man, what if Deacon finds out about all this. I think I should come backtoo and leave Amelia here. Then the three of us break free with the others andcome back for her,” Adam said running his hands through his hair nervously.
“Pleasedon't leave me alone,” Amelia begged placing a hand on Adam’s arm. “Please staywith me, I don't want to be alone anymore.” A few tears escaped her eyes andshe lowered her head.
One look atthat beautiful sad face had Adam changing his mind. “Okay, okay, I'll stay withyou just don't cry okay?” Adam said panicking because he didn't know how tostop her crying.
“All thissounds good, only one thing stands in our way,” Will said, a grim smile on hisface.
“What?”Adam and I said at the same time.
“Clearingout the fire station and making sure it's safe,” Will replied. “George, as it'syour plan you go first.” He laughed.
I got outof the truck and the three of them got out shortly after. We all looked aroundchecking for zombies, we couldn’t see any people alive or walking dead, howeverthere were a few bodies too badly damaged to reanimate on the grassy areaopposite us. We quickly turned and approached the fire station door hoping wewould find it free of any people alive or dead.
Chapter7
"Georgeyou and me first, Amelia you after me and Adam will take up the rear,” Willinstructed us.
The threeof us nodded our heads to show we understood. I pulled the handle down andwalked through the door.
I stoppedshort and banged the door three times loudly. Adam kept a look out behind us incase the sound attracted any outdoor zombies. Will and I scanned the inside. Itwas about 1:00pm so there was plenty of light to see by. We were in the garagepart of the station where they kept the trucks and other equipment.
The spacewas empty. The large doors were closed. I assumed it was because when theapocalypse started there were multiple fires all across the country and allfire engines were needed. Although I couldn’t explain why the doors wereclosed.
We checkedout all the cupboards with me opening the doors and Will standing behind me,gun at the ready. There was nothing but equipment in them. We checked all ofthe other exterior doors and found them safe and secure with push bars to openfrom the inside.
Willgestured for Adam and Amelia to come in and close the door. “Upstairs next,I'll go first, then George, Amelia next and Adam on the rear again.” There wasone set of stairs in the middle of the back wall and the fire pole at the farend in the corner of the room.
We ascendedthe stairs slowly and quietly, listening for sounds of movement but all wassilent. The
