Peoplerushed to his aid as he collapsed on the floor.
Being atrained first aider I went to go and help but Poppy wouldn’t leave my hand go,“Don’t go daddy, there’s a bad man, can we go now.” Her little hand pulled atmine.
“Uh yeah oksweet heart, he has plenty of help there anyway” I assured her.
Handing thelady my card, we heard another scream, followed by many more, the man must havedied and re animated and started to bite at the people trying to help him, another man, probably the one that started all this came around the corner, also biting at everyone he could lay his hands on.
Chaoserupted so quickly it still didn’t seem real.
“George, let’s get to the car,” Kelly said, panic lacing her voice.
Thecashier, threw my card back at me and receipt. “Thank you for shopping here,”she said before quickly closing her till and running off.
Kelly hadthe trolley with Cameron in it, I picked up Poppy and ran with her out of thestore into the car, throwing in the bags of shopping as quickly as I could andleaving the trolley right there in the car park. Thankfully we got home safelywith all of our shopping.
But I canstill hear the man’s screams now as he was feasted upon, still see the blood,so much blood…
“George?Where’s Will and Adam?” Nia startled me out of my thoughts.
“Uh, overthere on the roof.” I pointed to where I last saw them, on the other rooftrying to get into the building through the fire door up there.
“Oh, Iguess they got in,” I said, realizing that I was looking at an empty roof.
Before wecould say anymore, the door we were looking at flew opened and Adam ran throughit closely followed by Will and a dozen or more zombies. Will was the first totake the leap back to our side, landing smoothly and Adam next landing not sosmoothly and calling out in pain as he hit the roof.
Nia and Iwere quickly by his side, helping him to sit up to see where he had been hurt.
“I twistedmy ankle as I landed,” Adam explained.
Will movedover to us too and the four of us watched in horror as dozens of zombies camethrough the door of the other building, however because they could not jump, they just continued to walk off the building, showing no fear or hesitation asthey fell off the edge, down the six floors and hitting the pavement below.
We couldhear the snapping of bones and the squelching of blood and tissue as they gotbroken and crushed from the fall and from others landing on them.
Between thesounds and the smells coming from them I was starting to feel nauseous, and Iwasn’t the only one.
Niastumbled off to our left and threw up, she stood in the corner for a fewseconds more, trying to catch a breath.
“I need togo back inside,” she said and made her way back down the stairs into thestation.
Will, Adamand I just nodded, our eyes still transfixed on the zombies coming through theother door. The crowd was thinner now but there was still a steady stream ofthem, and then I saw the worst thing that I had ever seen in this apocalypse sofar.
A littleboy, about the age of 9 or 10 came through the door, missing his left cheek andpart of his nose, revealing the white bone underneath, stringy bits of muscleand gristle dangled from his wounds.
He lookedat us with milky white eyes and growled, before breaking into a run, when hecame to the edge of his building he didn’t slow down and it actually lookedlike he would make it to our side but he fell to the ground just like the restbefore him.
“We have toget away from here,” I told the other two who merely nodded.
Will and Ihelped to get Adam to his feet, he tried placing the weight on his ankle andcalled out in pain.
“Well that’sour distraction plan out of the window, I can’t walk on this never mind run. Ifwe are forced to leave, don’t wait for me, just get everyone else to safety ok,we have come too far to be held up by an idiot like me,” he said limping inbetween us as we supported him.
“Actuallywe have come too far to leave an idiot like you behind, we got into thistogether and we will get out of it together, ok?” Will replied.
“Agreed,I’ll go with Amelia if it comes to that,” I told them.
Will wasthe first down the stairs, Adam and I followed behind him, silently. Each lostin our own thoughts. Adam used the banisters on either side of the stairs tosupport himself on the way down.
As soon as weentered the room and Amelia saw that Adam was hurt, she immediately ran to himand started to make a fuss over him. I could tell she was really taken with theguy and by the way he was looking at her, the feeling was mutual.
“Oh Adam, are you ok? Come and sit down.” She led him to one of the chairs and moved thecoffee table so that he could keep his foot rested. “I’m sure I saw a cold packin one of the first aid packs,” she said and made her way into the kitchen.
Will wastalking to everyone else trying to keep them busy and motivated so that theydidn’t think about our current situation.
I made myway to the fire escape and opened the door quietly, it didn’t make adifference, as soon as they saw me, the zombies underneath started their moans,I wondered if they could communicate with each other or if it was only thenoise that drew more of them.
I forcedmyself to concentrate on further down the alley. The building at the end had afire escape ladder like ours only theirs was already down. This is exactly whatI wanted, Amelia and I could run to
