We slept on my chaise in one another’s arms, spent and exhausted. I awoke, confused, and unsure what time it was, a muted thumping sound making me leap to awareness. I pushed out from under the warm slack form of my lover and staggered to the door.
On opening the door and stepping out into my bedroom, sunlight sent shafts of brilliant light to arc across the room blinding me for a second. I heard that someone was indeed banging on my bedroom door. I closed the bookcase door to hide my sleeping companion and reached for my robe.
“That will do, that will do”, I said gruffly.
“I’m coming!” My bedside clock stated it was seven a.m. When I was decent I strode to the bedroom door, unlocked it, and dragged the door open to see the harried face of Mr. Troy. He was not in his suit, as was expected of a valet, but his pyjamas.
“What the devil is going on?” I complained.
“Sir, oh, sir. I’m so terribly sorry to wake you.” He simpered apologetically,
“But your friend… your Mr. Euan… he’s gone sir, snuck away in the night. And he’s taken all of your silver!”
